camping friends

Camped all over Colorado. Molas Lake, Twilight Peak, all the way up to Estes Park.

Every year the grad students would do a backpacking trip. I never went, cause I was almost 20 years older than them. We had little in common. But this year it was to the Sisters, and I knew of a couple side treks I wanted to take, so I agreed.

The trek in was long... maybe 11 miles...and it was far from easy. We were well above the tree line. When they stopped, I looked around. Big open space...lake...I could see why an amateur would pick it. I looked up at the sky...you could feel the pressure...it was going to rain even though it was cloudless. I mentioned we should move on. They laughed at me. So even though i was beat, i pointed out the where I would be...about a quarter mile up away from the lake.

We had dinner...and the typical interaction, but because we were up above the treeline, the campfire was small and didnt last long. Off to bed.

Around midnight, the first patters of drops were heard, and within 15 minutes, the sky opened. About 5 minutes later, I heard the screams and turmoil. I smiled. Amateurs. I grabbed my rope and my flashlight. See, they had camped in a bowl. There were no small rocks anywhere. Why would that be? They were everywhere else. Of course, the water all runs downhill...towards the lake. Yep, their perfect campsite had about a foot of water raging through it. Not much left. Shit washed into the lake. I pulled them out of the torrent and left them there, and went back to my dry bed. People were cold... wet...angry and fighting.

A couple hours later, I heard someone stumbling around. It was 3 girls. I knew them...but didnt. I could tell they were cold. I didnt have enough dry clothes to give them, but I gave them what I had...and no I wasnt giving up my sleeping bag. I did make them hot tea. One asked me if I knew that was going to happen. I shrugged my shoulders. Why didnt you say something? Hmmmmm. I did. Somehow, the 4 of us did fit in my 2 man tent and we kinda slept until daybreak, when we hiked out. Shitty, cause I still havent had an opportunity to take those side treks I wanted. But I did end up w 3 new friends. Lol.

Camping in the Rockies

Good morning! I live in northwest Colorado and camp frequently, almost every weekend in the Summer. It’s a great way to access mountain biking, hiking, and other sorts of outdoor adventures. And of course nothing is better than sharing body heat to stay warm on a chilly night!

I can see you have skills around the campfire!

You have some good ideas, and something about nights in a tent, after a day hike, is so refreshing ;)

It’s amazing, isn’t it? A long day in the sun, a dip in a fresh stream to rinse off, warm evening by the fire, then long, slow sex under the stars without a care in the world...
