Back in the day, well, the 1980's, the right was quiet as church mice on Nafta. It was opposed by some folks on the left as a trade deal that would send good manufacturing jobs to Mexico and elsewhere, leading to increased joblessness primarily in what we now call "the rust belt". Good middle class jobs would be lost to employ Mexicans for much less wages. Many American companies did, In fact, board up shop here in the US to head for just over the border in Mexico. Today, this is both a issue on the left and the right.

Why do you think this is the case?

PS... Micheal Moore's first documentary, Roger and Me does a decent job of documenting one of the many, places, industries and it's workers that fell victim to Nafta, that being Flint Michigan.

Bonus points for anyone who understands the connection between Nafta and the Flint Michigan water crisis. Yes, they are directly connected.

The new and improved NAFTA isn't not so much a trade deal, but an immigration construct designed to incent manufacturers to raise wages in Mexico to reduce Mexicans from entering into the U.S. to seek employment.

$17/hour is going to create a whole new middle class in Mexico. Nice of Trump to set another country on the path to greater prosperity.

The whole point of free trade agreements was to raise the standard of living throughout the world so they could afford to buy US products we no longer make. :)

Most of the major, key components of the ‘new’ NAFTA agreement were negotiated and agreed to during the Obama administration’s work on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The Trump administration basically renamed it and took credit for it.
