What is the difference between Netscape Navigator and Netscape Communicator?

I have Netscape 4.08... and I keep getting pop-ups telling me I should upgrade to the new 6.2.2

Everytime cheffie sends me a link on AIM, it takes me to a default Netscape page telling me my browser is out of date.

Have there been any problems with the new 6.2 version? Should I keep my 4.08, or upgrade?

Netscape Navigator is strictly for web browsing as I remember it. I haven't used it in years though.

Netscape Communicator is for web browsing and email. Easier to share and access information with.

First of all, stay away from MicroSoft's I.E. It's not so much that it's a bad product, jsut the favorite target of the hackers and virus breeders.

As for Netscape. I'm using 4.79 and haven't had a problem. I would recommend it. I did try 6.2.2 and although it worked, I found it to be dog slow on my system.

If you are currently using the Navigator product, you should find the Communicator an easy upgrade and familiar.

if you're gonna go with netscape, GET THE NEWEST VERSION netscape NAVIGATOR 6.2 is the current one, communicator was just their attempt at making a more globally accepted program, which failed since it's not around

Sabbathstorm is right.

I browse mostly using IE 6.0, but use Netscape 4.79 for e-mail and newsgroups.

I don't like using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express because half of the viruses and worms are written explicitly for them.

how can u stick with old versions of stuff, i suggest everyone who's using old netscape, upgrade to the new one, it combines everything of the old versions and varieties and adds more

Sometimes the newer programs are more flawed than the older ones. At least older versions usually have patches and security fixes to repair mistakes. I'm still running IE 5 with patches simply because IE 6 is a piece of shit....but that's just my opinion :D

Reason to stick with an old version: it's tried and true.

I just downloaded Netscape 6.2 and it won't load onto my computer.. keeps saying I lost my network connection when I didn't.

I'm sticking with 4.08

GRRRRRRR @ storm just cause i want to :D, and too bad @ the 6.2 thing.....

good, cause i got at least a year of training ahead of me :)

I use Internet Explorer 6. I have tried the Netscape software, but didn't like it.

I can't help with Netscape problems since I don't use it. Maybe one of the people who has already posted can help.

As for IE being a target for hackers, I have used IE since I got on to the net 4 years ago; the only hackers I got was when I used ICQ. And back then I used both Netscape and ICQ, I got hacked so much it isn't funny.... Now I use IE, and I don't get hacked.
Sure, I get viruses in my email, but it is easy to pick out something fishie.

Netscape also has it's fair share of viruses as well.

Well, fuckit. Let's just all go UNIX.

I really should upgrade Netscape 6, but when it first came out I tried it and found it to be very parasitic, the lack of which in the previous versions was it's strong point.

Many people having trouble with the newer browsers are having trouble because they are using old hardware or have not upgraded it. It's like trying to run Win XP on a 486.

Though I will say this, some DOS games are still better than the newer 3D versions (ie- Panzer General, for instance)
