I was just reading the thread about whether or not women like to have sex during their period, and I started to wonder....

I was considering getting the birth control shot (once every three months) that not only keeps you from getting pregnant, but also makes your period lighter, or completely non-existant. But then after reading that post, I wondered if the shot would also effect my horniness? I get really horny about a week before my period, and have the greatest sex, and I don't really want to lose that feeling! So, is anyone out there on the shot, or know anything about it, and able to give me some advice? Thanks!

I think if I was interested in this shot,I'd try it and see what happens. It may not affect you at all and you can continue to get them, or they may affect you that way and you can stop after the first shot.

I was on Depo Provera for approxmiately a year and it was nothing but pure hell. I had prolonged bleeding and my periods increased instead of getting better. I also put on a lot of weight and ended up in a horrible depression. I fell for the "it'll stop or lighten your periods" bit too. I'd seriously suggest you talk to your doctor and do some research on some reputable websites like webmd.

As for affecting horniness...that was non-existant due to the prolonged bleeding and other problems.

Another thing to consider is that this shot has residual affects for up to two years. I'm only now getting back to normal after being off it for just over two years.

From what I've known, there is a certain time when the egg can get fertilized. Other than that, there is no risk for pregnancy. Honestly, you can't get pregnant if there's no egg for the sperm to get to.
The only problem is... no matter how much a woman's cycle is just like clockwork, there's always that one rare egg which just happened to leave just a little early/late/in the middle of her cycle.
Then, she starts throwing up, and you have to go look for a job and a two bedroom apartment.
It's been documented that just having sex during the her recessive period (I'm not sure what to call it... seems like a good of term as any) is about a 64 percent chance of not getting pregnant.
Compare that to a condom.... 99.999 percent.

This is one of those no brainers....

Birth Control

The depo shot seems like a grand idea but the previous post in regards to its side effects are correct. The weight gain, cravings, and then associated depression are hell. Have you considered an IUD? There is nothing to remember to take each day, it last for 10 years, is completely safe, 99.9% effective in deterring pregnancy, removal and insertion are both really easy and it has no hormonal side effects. Just something to think about.

Above is a thread I had going a while back. It explains the medical definition of all forms of Birth Control, along with possible side effects, pro's and cons, and many women have written thier personal experiances with it on the thread.


I had the shot, and my period was gone for a year, both times I did the shot. The first year I was on it, I was fine, no weight gain (weight loss, in fact) no hormonal changes, nothing out of the ordinary.

The second time, which was around 2 years later, I had no fluctuation in weight at all, no period, but I had some hormonal changes. To put it bluntly I was a bitch all the time. No sex drive, either.

Everyone's body is different, and the changes depend on your own chemistry. It is good to know what works for others, but with Birth Control, it is more trial and error, since different things will re-act completly differently in some woman. Hell, for me, it reacted differently two different times. Though, one nice perk is that I only had to worry about birth control once every 3 months.

I always say that no matter what, use a condom as well, since there are STD's out there, and birth control of any other variety do not block agianst this.

The concept was it had the same effectiveness as the pill, but was worn like a nicotine patch, a week at a time (for those who forget to take their pills regularly). Seemed like a jolly good idea (the ad even showed the girl showering and the patch not falling off).

2. Everyone I've known on Depo has ended up pregnant (in the end), and has complained about all the other symptoms mentioned here on this thread. I can't recommend it to anyone.

But I have a radical vasectomy, so it's not my fault!

UNfortunately, there is always a risk...no matter how small it may be... there is always that .02% that could be you...anyway sperm (or so I heard in my human sexuality class my first year of college) can be viable in the vagina/uterus up to three days after intercourse...scary huh?

Ortho-Novum is a brand of OCP that is put out by Ortho. The patch is called Ortho-Evra. I tried it and it make me sicker than sick!

I did the Depo once and the first two months were great. No period, no mood swings, no lack of sex drive or anything. The third month, I had a light period which wouldn't have been so bad except that it never stopped. I didn't go back to get another shot and the next three months I had a light period ever other week. Four months off it now and I'm finally back to normal.

Y'know... the most reliable form of birth control is the male vastectomy.

i have never heard anything good about depo. ever. however, i myself am on *angelic fanfare* THE PILL! and omg do i LOVE it. i always know the EXACT day my period will start and end, it's only four days long, and it's very very light. once, i got a cramp, and it actually confused me. i didn't know what it was! i'm still very very eager to have sex and the darn thing is so tiny, you can swallow it without any water.

so i'd say go with the pill, not the shot. sure it's more work, but i believe it to be safer. but hey, i'm no gyno.

ProSkater, any time there are active sperm involved, a woman can get pregnant. Cum in her, cum on her, cum on the bedsheets. Although there has to be an egg for the sperm to impregnate, there is no way to tell whether an egg is present or not (unless she has had her ovaries, i.e. the egg factory, removed). Since no two women are the same, you never know when she ovulates (and anybody saying otherwise can never be 100% sure); top top that off, some may have an egg that's been hanging around for up to 21 days waiting for fertilization (rare, but not unheard of). So how do you make sure she doesn't get pregnant? Either remove the possibility of sperm (vasectomy), remove the possibility of an egg, or create a barrier between the two (condom, spermacidal foam with condom).

Planned Parenthood has an office in virtually every city and town, and has more information for you on everything you are asking about (including pregnancy, STD's, AIDS/HIV, birth control, effectiveness rates of different acts & methods, etc). They also have free condoms, dental dams, etc., and instructions on how to use them (don't assume you know just because you've used them: they will probably teach you things you didn't know about condoms, such as it's important to withdraw immediately so your cum doesn't leak around the bottom of the condom and get smeared on her skin, where it can migrate).

Just because it's called Planned Parenthood doesn't mean they want you to be a parent -- it means they want you to plan when you are going to have a child instead of having one by accident.

I've been using the Depo shots for over a year now. Some weight gain, but no period (yay! was glad to see the end of that, lemme tell ya!). No noticeable effect on desire, though since most of the time our schedules leave us too tired anyway, who can tell?

But they're sticklers about making sure you get the shot on time. They give maybe four days leeway from the scheduled day or else it's a side trip to the lab to pee in a cup for the pregnancy test.
