I have written a couple on contributions, only one of which has appeared so far. Question:

Which is better, to tell the story as it happened, with all the complications involved with not-quite-relevant bits, or to reinvent the whole occasion? I'm torn, and your thoughts would be useful,

Thank you

PS good luck with your new man in the job.....Laurel for president!

The answer to that question depends on two things. One, the story itself. Which method would make the story better, more interesting. And Two, which part of your audience do you wish to cater to.

Some stories need less buildup than others, less snatches from a character's life outside of sex. For instance, Ambrosious' story Perfect Feet http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=2205. There wasn't much outside besides what happened and the way the characters reacted. A blurb or two of history then into the story. It was an extremely good story as it is, better than it would be if he'd stuck in a bunch of extra things that don't have a place in the current action.

Other stories, like Whispersecret's Hostile Takeover http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=3481, have a great deal of things going on the side, things that don't really have anything to do with what is happening, but they make the story better.

The audience you are writing for is a factor in what sort of feedback you will get. This is, after all, an erotic story site, and a great number of people come here to read stories and whack off, not because of any literary love for erotica. Laurel and authors receive complaints because there was too much character development and not enough sex. Some people prefer the locker-room style of relating sex than a genuine story that has sex in it. On the other side are the readers who want a story and hot sex. They want characters that do more than fuck, they want development and plot. To liken it to the realm of porn video, some people just want to see fucking, some people just want to see a good movie with fucking in it.

There is no simple method of writing award winning erotica. You know what you like, write it the way you like it, your audience will respond to it. There really isn't a formula, you don't just write sex scene after sex scene and be successful, nor do you just write heavy character emphasis with the sex scenes being a by-product. It's a judgement call. You don't have to make the call by yourself, however. There are a ton of editors on file here who are happy to volunteer their services. http://www.literotica.com/storyxs/voled_stor.shtml It's free.

Good luck and happy writing!

Seriously, thanks for the plug. :)

I had to get into this....

Killer and Secret are excellent examples to follow, but remember that your art is your own. If a story "feels" better to you as a thoroughly developed story, go with it. If the story works fine without all the complications, go that route. Hell, write it both ways. Change the characters and the minor plots and see which one of the two is better accepted.

The main thing to remember is that it's YOUR art and no one else's. And there will always be critics out there.

Lazarus Long said that a critic is a being with no innate talent of its own which therefore feels qualified to judge the work of others.

And even bad press is better than no press at all. I once read a review that said this movie sucked so bad it never should have made it to the box office. I went to see that movie out of sheer curiosity. Turns out I really enjoyed that movie. Come to think of it, millions of other people enjoyed it too. Now what was it called.... Oh yeah, Star Wars.

Too bad you missed the debate on a topic rather similar to this one, JD.
