I don't have a huge collection, but it is growing. The problem is, I can never find what I want to listen to.

Do you categorize yours alphabetically? By type of music?

What about storing them in labled magazines?

I buy them, Listen to the first couple of tracks, then shove them over there --------> with all the other ones I don't listen to anymore.

My biggest problem is keeping my music cd's seperated from his PC game cd's.

Mine or organised generally by bands and genres of a kind... of course with 340 cds or so it does get tricky...

I make sure that the cd never sees the case after the first listen through.

I have a pile of favorites and a pile of others.

Of course, with only 20 cd's, this works for me.

:D

I only have 100 or so. They used to be nicely stacked on a shelf in my entertainment unit in alphabetical order. Then for some reason I would never put the CD I last listened to back in the order it belonged. So now they are just stacked nicely with the CDs I listen to most often on top.

Completely random...

Close my eyes when I select.

If I hate it, I have a shotgun...

PULL!

I go only by alphabetical order, attempting to classify by genre is a mistake unless your taste is tightly focused.

I have 2 bound albums that hold 200 CDs, then 2 that hold 24 that shuffle between the car and wherever else I am.

Once you do away with the jewel boxes, 500 CDs doesnt take up as much space as you would think.

Over 2500 and still growing... forget trying to alphabetise them, just whack them in blocks by genre, and group... It seems to work.

i have several hundred and keep them alphabetically - i packed away all the jewel cases and keep the cds in sleeves - they take a lot less room that way plus they are easier to keep in order and use ~

I have my CDs organized by the length and color of the musicians' hair. That way only I know where everything is.

When you've been buying Music CD's since 1985, you learn that there's NO sense in trying to keep them organized. When I bought my first one, (going to grab it off the shelf, Survivor - Vital Signs), I started writing the number of the order I bought them in, on them. That lasted until number 40. My mind is a steel trap, so I know RIGHT were they are, even if I move them around on the shelves.

LMAO - Mischka, Mischka - Such humor and intelligence! Your husband is very lucky. :)

Packing away the jewel cases seems like a good idea, but I like to refer to the lyrics fairly often. Do you keep the booklets with the cases? And if so, are they readily available and organized in such a way that you can find what you're looking for?

Wow. Thanks. :)

To be serious for a moment, I'm like you - I like to refer to the lyrics, but I had a hard time keeping all of the CDs organized and I don't like dragging jewel cases everywhere. I got a load of those acrylic CD holders from The Container Store. I alphabetized the jewel cases, leaving a good amount of space in between them so I can easily enlarge my collection without having to move every CD ("Another ABBA CD? What was I thinking?"). The acrylic cases stack easily and can be kept anywhere - in a drawer, in the closet, in the entertainment cabinet. I keep a rotation of 25 CDs in a padded wallet, which I bring with me in the car, over to friend's, etc. The system works out pretty well for me.

Here's what the storage containers look like:

CD Racks for the jewel cases and a CD wallet for traveling are good choices for keeping CDs where you can find them.

How you organize them depends on what you ask yourself when looking for a CD.

If it's "where is that CD by Charley Rich," then you need them sorted by artist.

If it's where is Days of future past then you need them sorted by title.

If you think, I feel like some jazz then youneed them sorted by genre.

If you're like Mishka and ask, "Where's that one by that long haired blond dude," then you need to make a databse (MS Excel is what I use for my books) that will tell you what shelf it's on. :p

It all really depends on what kind of music you listen to. I've got hundreds of jazz cds and they're sorted either by era, record label and then alphabetically or according to rank of influence (Coltrane before Shepp - Monk before Taylor, right?)

Of course, it's easy to separate the CDs from the Vinyl? :D You people still remember vinyl...

My collection of mostly classical music is sorted into three categories.

A - Alphabetically by last name of composer (when every track is composed by the same person)

B - Alphabetically by last name of performer (soloist, conductor) or name of ensemble

C - Alphabetically by title (box sets, series and compilations)

Since C is the smallest division, it gets the albums that don't fit these classifications. Some arbitrariness is unavoidable.

So between CD's and vinyl, I have six divisions in my collection.

I think SummerRose has the most practical system. No muss no fuss. All she has to do when other people want to pick out CDs is tell them to take em from the top because the ones on the bottom suck. It's so simple it's beautiful.

I do the same thing. The only thing you have to make sure of is to get good quality non-vinyl inserts, because the paint on some CD's sticks to the vinyl on cheaper binders. I have the Case Logic binders which seem to work pretty well.

I have an informal cache, as it were. The most used CDs end up in a small binder, and they rotate out to the bigger binder when I get bored with the CDs in the little case.
