The lady that lives behind us wants sasebrat to come over for a lesson but she hasn't gone yet. She says it's one thing to learn how to belly dance but it another thing to take a lesson from the minister's wife who's in her late 70's.

i'm starting a bellydance class tomorrow actually... hope i like it. i'm trying it for all the reasons you listed.

One nice thing about belly dance is that you don't have to be a specific size, shape or age to do it well.
The only people who look a bit weird sometimes are those with aftermarket breasts, because they don't shimmy so well.

had to train a bit with this when I was a majorette in high school(do NOT laugh) yes,, i was one of those bimbo's with go-go boots and a baton..
belly dancing was part of our training,,,LOVED IT!!!

Bring water to drink. It can be hard at first, seemingly impossible at times, but eventually you get stuff.

I waited a few years to get a hip scarf with coins that made noise, I probably should have done it early. The noise is great feedback.

oh and I can't do Zils, but Glynnis can.

Good Luck and have fun!

yeah....you try,and try,,then one day..look in the mirror and think "DAMN,,,,my hips can do THAT?" :nana:

I'll admit my bias to dancers in general, and my love for ancient times. To me a belly dancer is the epitome of sensuality, and feminity. Because a woman does not have to be a rail thin waif like ballet, and the muscles tend to become defined as the dancer practices and progresses, belly dancing to me is the best way for a woman to becoem more confident in herslf and more comfortable in her skin.

Granted I am a strange weird man, but I would highly highly encourage any woman who is slightly interested to try it. Please!

I agree...That is definitely one of the benefits of belly dancing.

I took a belly dance class last winter because I'd always figured that anything that sensual and beautiful had to be fun. After the initial awkward phase, I completely let myself get into it, and just had a great time. With any luck, my schedule will ease off and I'll go back again this fall.

Best part - it didn't matter who you were or what you looked like. One woman was in the class so that she could perform for her parent's 50 anniversary party, another was a serious dance student; one young girl was 6 mths pregnant (had to keep running to the bathroom), and then there was me..... we all had fun, and learned to relax and enjoy our own bodies a little bit more. Unfortunately, I missed the "end of session" performance due to work, but the next time I'll get up there and shake it !

The other thing I like about belly dancing is that it gives my mind a complete break from the worries of the day.

When I have been really upset, I can go there and after about a half hour, I get a break from what is upsetting me, because I need my entire mind to concentrate on what I am doing, its a full mind body experience. The music is doing one thing, hands feet and hips all something else and then if you add zils or in my case air zills, it can be overwhelming, and for that period of time there is no room to be upset.

Hi Noor, I voted :)

I have tried Belly Dance in the past. I actually dance the Samba and learned a few Afro-Latin dance styles as I am actually in a street band group that do festivals throughout northern England, UK.

I found it quite relaxing afterwards and it isn't that easy... very technical in how the body has to train itself into getting it right.

Thankyou for "enlightening" us :)

I have to agree with Salvor, I think that its one of the most sensual and beautiful dances out there, plus it would make an excellent piece of foreplay..... :) :rose:

PS, I also agree with thump, Ali, you is way hot... :p

I think this a cool subject to discuss... besides it promotes cool exercise as well as... SEX

;)

I'm a tomboy belly dancer, if there is such a thing. My mother tried me in ballet, jazz, tap and then ballet again. I HATED them. I started dancing in college because I had to take a PE class. It's the ONLY time I feel femininely beautiful, if that makes sense. Has any else noticed that there are literally are no non sensual/sexy belly dancers? I don't know for sure what it is, but something about the act of creating beauty imparts beauty. I'm probably putting this badly; I don't mean that there are ugly peeps who are only beautiful when they're being sexy. What I mean is, when it comes to belly dance, all "normal" views of western beauty get tossed out the window and you see women in their most primal and sensual state. Like me, I'm a tomboy. I don't wear very much make up. I don't wear a lot of jewelry. I don't do manicures, or dress all fancy like. I prefer jeans and sneakers to dressier clothes. And I'm not a beauty. The best that could be said of me is "cute" in a blandly Midwestern sort of way. But I'm beautiful when I dance.

Or at least I think so.

PS In some traditions, (most if I recall correctly) belly dancing started out as a male thing. My teacher is from Egypt and she's way cool with guys joining us. She encourages them. And so do we. :D They're very nummy guys, especially when they're not fitting the traditional standards of beauty either.

I'd love to try belly dancing someday, but I think I need to lose about 100 pounds before I should do it.

It's a highly personal decision, College, but seriously, you don't need to lose weight before starting. Most of us lose anyway when we start, and this is something that flatters all women, even short chunky ones like me.

Well, I thought about getting an aerobic bellydancing video (not the real thing, I know, but I figured it'd be a start), but then I thought about how I'd look doing it. Wiggling hips, butts, and breasts are sexy...wiggling everything else, not so much!

I have Neena and Veena's bellydancing cardio workout for in between classes.

I need to work off about 50lbs from my belly first
than I wouldn't mind getting a girl or three to teach me how it works

one guy I know's mom is a belly dancer
she's a jew who's parents are from isriel, she used to do massages and teach belly dances and some other stuff I forget what(shes not got many real world skills outside of that)
she's a very nice lady, but her son is a weird one

I have been fascinated with belly danincg for years. I have Neena and sisters DVDs and have wacthed them a few times and tried to dance wiyth them. It takes practice and concentration and I feel like the sexiest most beautiful woman alives when I am dancing!

w00t at shini! It's fun to have a guy in class. We had 1 the first semester I did it, and his buds razzed him a bit. But then they wised up some. Lessee, sexy guy, all alone in a class of 30 sexy women being all sensual and er, stuff. The second semester, we had 4.
