"Because it's there."

One of my girlfriends moved to Anchorage and then toward Juno *I may be mistaken on Juno, as has been about 10 years ago*, but she said the moose would come and graze in her backyard. She was taught very early when she arrived there how to react to a moose, especially if it is a mother moose.

Just another place I want to go. The Mrs. has been everywhere. Does she want a travel girlfriend? ;)
She has travelled a lot; she loves it. At this point, I think she'd travel with Frank Murkowski if it meant that she got to do some travelling. She has the bug bad, but not so much opportunity these days.

And I'm sure she'd love to travel with you.

special kayaks?

perhaps with icebreaking bows?

LOL...

bring the bass lures for northern pike........

you'd be really surprised how much equipment you don't need to enjoy the place

He just said that in colder weather, on the rivers, to not try to go cheap on the kayak, but he is also into white water. Not sure if I stated it right.

I have a shed full of fishing equipment. *no fishing jokes, Perg*.

Thor, I had a fresh water tank, huge, and my ex caught a Pike *small* and put that sucker in there. He ate every single one of my fish. Fucker.

I was going to say "That's cool," but I realized the pun would be awful. Interesting; I'd like to hear more.

Mrs Perg and I have talked about going to work in Antarctica for six months when I'm done with the undergrad stuff and have a year off before med school.

McMurdo or the Pole station? I almost went to McMurdo once, then NSF changed their mind after spending half the budget and then scrapping the project. A friend did a lot of the structural design on the new station at the pole.

I am sure we would have fun. I wish I was travelling as much with work as I used to. Would have been nice to have female company to hang out with. I grew up vacationing in a car, not a plane. Hence seeing so much of the States.

*edit* I worded that wrong. The intent was that I grew with wanderlust. Travelling by car.

We haven't thought that much about it yet. It'll be a year and a half from now if it happens at all.

Yeah, you know, it was the constant travel that burned me out in my last career, but now I miss it. I still get to go a few places once in a while. Hawaii in June, probably....

LOL, pike are prehistoric eating machines. They eat fish, rodents, ducks, whatever. Some people have introduced them to waters where they aren't native and they are eating all the trout, etc. It's a big problem here.

When I go out on field jobs in summer, I always pack an old eagle claw combo pack rod in an aluminum tube, a mitchell 300 with 6# line and a spool of 12# line, a medallist fly reel with #6 line, a shirt pocket box of flies and a small box of spinners and spoons. It doesn't take that much space and it's enough to have fun. I have to warn ya, some places the fishing sucks because you spend all your time catching and releasing fish, and have no time to relax.

You might have to get inline early. If you are going to overwinter, they want you to be able to pass tests, etc.

I'll be there in early June.

Hmmm. Fishing talk...

I've noticed that people who are into fishing have trouble talking about anything else. Two of my favorite examples are the guide who taught me to climb and a doc I met on an airplane. I sent the guide a copy of A River Runs Through It after the course, in which I wrote, "For ***, a climbing guide whose fishing talk would fill volumes." Later on we got to be friends and he said it was the most thoughtful tip he ever got.

The doc was a urologist and when we got to talking and I told him what I do, he kept telling me about fishing techniques to pass along to my students. Students of medicine. I wanted to know about stuff like UTIs and kidney stones....

Really? Wouldn't it be strange if we met there, of all places? I think I'm going to be there in late June, though. Leave the place unlocked.

Yeah, I've had a couple friends who went, and I'm waiting on some emails about all that. Like I said, at this point, it's just conceptual.

it's a family thing.....i would never waste any summer time out of state if i didn't have to go.......there could be worse places to go......

i'll leave the gates as i find them

Half the paddle, twice the paddler.

If I had to choose only two outdoor activities, I'd xc ski in the winter and climb all year.

Well, a change is okay once in a while. How long will you be there? Long enough to miss black fly seson?

Anchorage is also very MTB friendly. All the dirt ski trails turn to MTB trails on June 1.

What's the tag and release laws there? I usually ride my bike to the sound side where I am now. I don't know if you are familiar with the Outer Banks. In AZ, I tried fly fishing. As I have stated before, it is much harder. I take my tiny tackle with me on early morns. Tag and release is usually on the Tournaments, for Marlin. We are quite a ways offshore, under a certain weight, unless listed by the Marine Fisheries, are OK for meat fish.

I did it again, Perg... Shit.

That's cool, then. It's just, like, a vacation. Do some snorkeling.
