Aiguille

The French word for "needle" is applied to appropriate geological features in the mountains. This is the Aiguille Du Midi, a rather famous one:

As with all climbing, the particular geology/geography presents both its own compulsions and compunctions. Aiguilles tend to form in younger mountain ranges, notably the Alps, where erosion has not yet rounded everything off, as in the Appalachians. This means the angles can be steeper and the rock can be loose and friable, "chossy" in climbing argot. Obviously, these needles of rock tend to form on the tops of things, as well, so weather and altitude are bound to be interesting.

Sometimes the word "gendarme" is used instead. Typically, this would be much smaller than an "aiguille:"

Occasionally, a particular gendarme becomes iconic:

This is at Seneca Rocks in WV. The gendarme in question fell over a few years ago. Those who were fortunate enough to climb it said that you could feel it swaying a little sometimes....

It is actually a great climbing *you are better at the climbing*, rappelling area, being in Southern AZ.

Ah... Camping and hiking there is fun, as well. Short day hikes. 8.6 *so documented, but sometimes, goodness, feels longer* miles on trails.

Cochise Stronghold is known for some great climbing, and like most climbing areas, has its own little quirk. In this case, it's the "chickenheads," little protrusions that result from uneven erosion:

It is probably about 30 miles*?* from Mt. Lemmon. I *think* it's on Reservation land. I am not sure about permits and such for climbing. I know when I was living there we had to get Reservation permits, not just State.
