"Because it's there."

Aiguille

The French word for "needle" is applied to appropriate geological features in the mountains. This is the Aiguille Du Midi, a rather famous one:

And this is one I hadn't heard of before, the Aiguille Du Varan:

As with all climbing, the particular geology/geography presents both its own compulsions and compunctions. Aiguilles tend to form in younger mountain ranges, notably the Alps, where erosion has not yet rounded everything off, as in the Appalachians. This means the angles can be steeper and the rock can be loose and friable, "chossy" in climbing argot. Obviously, these needles of rock tend to form on the tops of things, as well, so weather and altitude are bound to be interesting.

Hiya, Veebs.

Yeah, it does. You can see his mouth...

Cool.

It is actually a great climbing *you are better at the climbing*, rappelling area, being in Southern AZ.

Ah... Camping and hiking there is fun, as well. Short day hikes. 8.6 *so documented, but sometimes, goodness, feels longer* miles on trails.

I've heard of it, actually. I'd love to go. Do you know, is it near Cochise Stronhold? I've wanted to climb there for years since I saw an OB instructor give a slideshow of it.

It is probably about 30 miles*?* from Mt. Lemmon. I *think* it's on Reservation land. I am not sure about permits and such for climbing. I know when I was living there we had to get Reservation permits, not just State.
