I had a very surreal moment several hours ago.
I was driving my kids home after my daughter's piano lesson when she said she saw a deer. We weren't in a tree-filled area, and I didn't see it, but I turned around and drove back to where she thought it was. We saw not one, but three deer. A doe and two fawns, still with their spotted coats, were blissfully eating in an open field. I parked the car and we watched for awhile as they grazed and wandered about. My son talked about Bambi and my daughter said she realized why they were called whitetail deer. It was one of those nice relaxing moments, and then -
Loud plane noises suddenly startled the deer and us. We looked up to see the Stealth Bomber flying overhead, swooping low. We live fairly close to an active airfield, but I didn't realize the big boys were in town this week. The Stealth is graceful and absolutely majestic in flight; it almost doesn't look real. My kids couldn't decide if it looked more like a prehistoric bird or an alien creation (or maybe Batman, my 4 year old decided). It was so close the shadow covered us as it went by. My kids loved it - even though the deer ran away - and I was just in awe of the overwhelming power of it all. The beauty of nature and the kick-ass power of our military.
Now - I've just gotten my kids to sleep - (my husband has to work late tonight). I've poured myself a drink and I am sitting here at the keyboard contemplating life and its complexities . . . Slainte!
