Autumn Valley OOC

So...I'm hoping this fits with the tone of the setting. It's a take on a legend from a Native-American tribe local to the NE region. I tried for 'folk-sy', let me know what you think.

Name: Jacob Harrington
Age: 25

Appearance: Just over six feet tall, athletic build, appears to be of Western European/Native American mixed heritage. Lightly tanned skin, dark of eyes and hair.
Jacob's appearance.

Personality:
(See background for details on why there are two listings.)
Jacob is generally courteous and kind-hearted while at the same time sarcastic and witty. It is clear he uses the second set of traits as a barrier to keep others from getting too close, afraid of what will happen should his control slip but for a moment. Even while in control, he exhibits something of a "wild streak".

While under the influence of his 'passenger', Jacob's good natured wit turns sharp. He become insistent, foolhardy and short-tempered. He will attempt to coerce those around him into joining him in his supernaturally-induced bout of excess and revelry.

Background:

Jacob's great-great-grandfather Jeremiah was a spirit medium of renowned ability and a well-respected member of the Autumn Valley community. His wife was a member of the local Algonquian tribe, and Jeremiah maintained a strong relation with them through this link. During a particularly harsh New England winter an Algonquian man was brought before him, bound at wrists and ankles, his form gaunt and grey as if the man had been dead for some time. His howls of rage and hunger, however, told differently. According to the shaman that traveled with him, the man had been possessed by the spirit of the Wendigo during a hunting trip to the mountains. His group had become lost and sought refuge in a cave, where the man was accosted by the spirit and promised continued life, if only he would consume the flesh of his fellows. Such a deed was done, and several days later the man came stumbling into the village in his current condition.

No manner of ritual had successfully cleansed the man of the Wendigo spirit so he was brought before Jeremiah as a last ditch effort to avoid euthanization. Jeremiah confronted the spirit, managing to draw it unto himself while avoiding possession but he was unable to banish the ancient and powerful Manitou. A battle of spiritual will ensued that was rumored to last for hours, the end of which found man and spirit still locked in a stalemate. Unwilling to release the malevolent being back into the wilds to possess another, a bargain was struck; Jeremiah, and every first-born child thereafter, would serve as both a vessel and a prison for the Wendigo spirit. The spirit would be contained, but it's presence would forever tempt it's vessel from the darkest corner of their mind. The Wendigo agreed, feeling that it would eventually overcome it's human prison even if it would take centuries.

The Harrington burden was passed to the next in line upon death of the previous carrier. Jacob's mother was the last, and when she was killed along with his father in a horrific car accident, ten year old Jacob was the next up to inherent the family curse.

Jacob had been an exemplary child, the sort that all parents hope thier offspring would become. After the death of his parents, the responsibility of his care passed to his grandmother. Upon receiving the curse, which his parents had not had time to properly prepare him for before their untimely passing, young Jacob was unable to resist the dark whispers of the Wendigo. It encouraged excess, danger and disobedience. It was a slow and gradual fall from grace, but by the age of fifteen, Jacob was well known as the town hellion. His grandmother, unable to control the unruly teen, was driven to the point of desperation, and Jacob was sent off to a boarding school as a last result.

Fast forward ten years to the present day. Jacob eventually did learn to exert some control over the spirit's influence, and graduated from a trade school where he obtained his mechanic's license. He has returned to Autumn Valley in order to care for his grandmother in her waning years, and hopes to acquire a job working on cars and farming equipment towards that end.

The presence of the spirit has a few side-effects; His eyes shift from brown to a pale, ice blue in moments where the spirit has gained some manner of influence. During these times his behavior becomes rash and irresponsible. The Wendigo's whispers prod him towards acts of lust, jealousy and foolhardiness, and it generally bides it's time and power until moments of great stress or deep depression, in which it encounters the least amount of resistance from Jacob. These moments are a rare occurance now that he has matured and learned some manner of control, but the Wendigo never sleeps...

Nom. Me likey.

I suspect paganism was the town's dirty little secret. But perhaps the pagans were useful for keeping the faeries and other creatures under control so they were tolerated.

And I can see the Puritans being like my Catholic relatives when they found out I read tarot cards. "The Bible says fortune tellers are going to hell--Read my cards!"

Sort of what I had in mind. For reasons no one really knows, the valley is just a nexus for the supernatural. Paganism was a closely guarded secret in the town for a while, but after a few generations, it started integrating. These days the residents of Autumn Valley practice a unique blend of Paganism and Christianity.

I got the inspiration from thinking of how Christianity interacted with the indigenous faiths of the Central American people and ended up becoming things like Santeria.

I see Carson as a way for other writers to delve into their characters with more exposition; Carson will ask lots of questions, of course, as it is his nature. I am eager to see if he gets any answers, and if he does, what they might be. (I will coordinate with any writer whose character Carson "interviews" to see what direction they want to take the interaction.)

I like that idea. Gives us a smooth way to incorporate the exposition while also showing how Autumn Valley deals with outsiders.

Adds a little touch of horror without shifting the whole tone of the thread. Welcome.

I might be a little slow posting over the next couple days. I'm getting over a bad summer cold that I picked up over the weekend and I'm currently in a state of violently coughing, seemingly trying to hack up an entire lung every two minutes. I just got up half an hour ago and already my head is pounding from all the coughing fits.

Been there unfortunately. Feel better. I sounded like I had a smoker's cough for a few weeks myself.

Since we now have 5 male writers, I'm going to leave the casting open only to women from this point on unless/until we have a dropout.

Dropout policy is pretty simple. If you go 7 days without posting, I'll send you a PM asking if everything is okay. I understand how life can sometimes be a bitch. If you feel that you don't have the time or will to write for the thread anymore, no hard feelings. If I don't hear back from you in 3 days, your name will be dropped from the roster and we'll reopen the casting for someone to fill in your place.

Sound fair to everyone?

Hope this fits

Name: Kayla

Age: As old as the town, plus as old as the tree before it. If you were to ask, she would say she lost count around 300.

Appearance: Kayla has auburn red hair, cut to just below her shoulder. Her eyes a matching light brown. A tiny teardrop jewel decorates her forehead. Her body is curvy, and ample in all the right places. The leaves themselves seem to be her clothes, clinging to her body, leaving nothing to the imagination, yet assuring everything is covered.

Personality: Kayla is a Dryad, or Wood Nymph. She is intelligent, but playful and mischievous as well as very amorous. Being quite socialable, she enjoys the company of others, and loves to sing if given the opportunity. Her soft and gentle nature only changes should someone threaten the wood she is bonded too. She can become quite hostile, using her song and body to disarm the threat before using any means neccesary to end it. She enjoys getting to know new residents, feeling quite motherly to the town as a whole. She is frightened of open flames, as it presents a potential danger to her home and her life.

Background: Before the town was settled, a grand Oak tree stood beside the little river, protected by a youthful looking Dryad. She would sit in its branches and sing to her heart's content, spending her time growing flowers and other plants around the lush fields and riverbanks.
Then the Pagan Settlers came. The angelic spot was to be a new village and ofcourse, he tree was in the way. They were not without heart and compassion though, and struck a deal with the spirit. They cast a ritual, enchanting the wood so that no matter how many pieces it was in, it would live on, and so too would the Dryad. This was acceptable, and in place of the tree, a quaint oak house now stands, and Kayla became a permenant resident of Autumn Valley
Kayla has become the unofficial gardener of the village, keeping the land beautiful over the years with the town square becoming her pride and joy. Everyone regularly sees this beautiful Nymph flitting around tending to her gardens, and anyone else's that has hired her.

One year, at a particularly rowdy festival, a fire grew out of control and threatened to burn down her home. It was only the timely efforts of Fi and some of the other villagers that saved her home and her life.

A wood nymph and a girl with a magical penchant for fire. It's the new Odd Couple!

Welcome. This means we have room for one more female writer.

I hope neither of you are Jack Lemon. Too stuffy.

Fi's a hard ass, not sure about stuffy. Course the rumors about her keep most people from wanting to find out just how wild she might be.

Think Sig would enjoy the company of a wood nymph given she'd be a woodland entity that's not about to crash through on war horses trying to kill him or the people he urged to protect :p

Who doesn't enjoy a bit of sex that scares the hell out of you every now and again? Now granted, I'm not advocating having sex in a room full of angry badgers. You know, not unless you're descended from Teddy Roosevelt. But sex with a chick who could set my hair on fire when she cums? As long as there's a fire extinguisher within arm's reach...

So,... when do we start?

I don't know, a young Jack Lemmon is pretty cute.

Funny how many redheads we have :) I have friends in the UK and other countries and they say how no one particularly cares for redheads (gingers), they sure don't have the sexy rep they have in the US.

I can make Teagan look Black Irish (dark hair and blue eyes) if that helps. Or change Sophia's hair color, maybe she should have coloring like Catherine Zeta-Jones.

It would make sense to have Kayla's tree/house in the fey section of town--on the outskirts and possibly part of the farmland the fey occupy.

@DrStein,

Sorry to hear you have a cold, I had a nasty one a month ago and I'm still coughing up gunk. Part of it with me is I also have Spring allergies, so mine is a double whammy. I can PM somethings you can try to see if it helps.

And the dropout policy sounds fair to me.

So,... when do we start?

Thread goes up Saturday morning.

@DrStein,

I think the worst of it is over. I've been popping zinc lozenges like candy, have a cool mist humidifier running in my bedroom while I sleep, take hot showers every morning, and drink a nightly mug of hot water mixed with apple cider vinegar and honey (it's an acquired taste).

At this point the main problem is the early morning coughing fits and the resulting headaches and sore ribs.

If you had only just applied, I would say we have enough, but since you put up your idea earlier and were invited by Haremfaery, we can make room for you.

Thank you very much...I'm sorry for the delay I'll take care of it right now.

So,... when do we start?

You take him then and I'll have a young Ann-Margret. :) ahh another redhead.

And I don't think there is a need to change hair color's. Maybe it's just common in this town like blonde hair and blue-eyes with those children of the corn kids. lol
