Professor Roderick Dixson looked out at the lecture hall. There was the usual smattering of graduate experimental psychology students there, because they were all required to attend faculty lectures, but beyond that and one very attractive young woman he didn't recognize immediately, the hall was empty. Professor Dixson was surprised that the turnout was so low, given the topic of the lecture: "A new clinical trial of the experimental drug Leva-Aphrodesia."
Professor Dixson had won a major competition to be one of the testing sites for the medication, which, according to its manufacturer, "shows great potential for enhancing sexual pleasure in its users, particularly AFAB users."
The double blind trial was to test the effectiveness of the drug with self-identifying sexually active college students. In the trial, different dosages of the drug would be tested against a placebo. Students who were not prevented from participating by the exclusion criteria would be given the drug to use daily. Professor Dixson lab team would recruit subjects, get informed consent from those wanting to be involved, give them blinded bottles containing the drug or the placebo, give them an app to record their daily observations, schedule interviews with subjects on a weekly basis, and report all findings to the company.
Professor Dixson explained all the aspects of the study to the students. The purpose of the meeting was to not only spur interest in the study and possibly recruit subjects, but also to see if there was someone interested in working on Professor Dixson's research team as a paid assistant.
The students seemed blase about the study and soon dispersed after he finished talking, except for the young woman he didn't recognize. As he packed up his computer and gathered his papers, she stepped shyly forward and asked if she could speak with him.
