In annother category there is a thread called 'Author Required--' same title, different idea.
In a world where everything goes according to "script." Riffing (not ripping) off 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit,' in the "Real World" authors are in constant and sometimes desperate demand to complete story arcs of "Fantasy World" characters "left in the lurch" when the original (or third replacement) author goes off and does something different-- family, 9 to 5 job, retires, dies, loses interest: or the big one gets lured away to complete a different project.
It could be a dystopian world where a failing state-- think the USSR in the 80s-- is the sole employer and authors are renumerated far beyond thier actual value because the state is keeping the population docile by producing free fap material by the literal mega-ton printed on acid process newsprint. (A Hamiltonian idea, the paper disintigrates greatly hampering collecting and trading.) A very few halftone "pictures" and lots of text with blurry inks distributed by workplaces at the end of a full day to ensure thier employess show up for scheduled shifts.
An authors pay, the car they drive, the schools thier kids go to, the stores they can shop in, the city apartment they live in, and the time-share dacha on a lake are dependent on thier popularity with the masses whose lives consist of getting up, putting on identical coveralls, working in a filthy factory producing defective products while getting smashed on bootleg vodka before collecting thier "magazine" at the end of the day and going home to fantisize about living in the "Fantasy World" depicted in the stories.
