Just in case auld acquaintance be forgot this time, I'd like to know what it all means.

Those lyrics (with annotations) are:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

(Most of that is self explanatory, but "auld lang syne" is basically "long ago" or "the older times.)

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

(Jo = dear or sweetheart.)

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll be mine,
And we'll tak a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

(Roughly, "And surely you'll buy your pint-cup / And surely I'll buy mine" ...)

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine,
But we've wander'd many a weary fitt,
Sin auld lang syne.

("We two have run about the slopes / And walked the daisies fine / But we've wandered many a weary way / Since olden times.")

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.

("We two have paddled in the stream / From morning until dinner / But broad seas have roared between us / Since olden times.")

And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o thine,
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne

("And here's my hand, my trusty friend, / and give me thine / and ..." buggered if I know ;) )

So would we all, especially when we have forgotten the words, or are too drunk to remember them.

Happy New Year.

Og

Edited for PS: Thank you for the words above. I shall endeavour to forget them at the first opportunity i.e. after the next pint.

Auld lang syne

Just means for old times sake! Remembering people and times past - and at New Year raising a glass to one and all!!

I'm reading a new translation of Beowulf that actually makes sense. Maybe the writer should have a go at this song.
