The "right" length of erotic stories has been discussed at depth, and I think we all agreed about the fact that such a thing as the "right length" doesn't exist in general but depends on the story, the plot, style of writing etc.

The question now is: how about Audio Stories?
I assume it is in general the same "idea" about the length (plot, content style etc.) - but would you say there is something like a "critical point"? Like 10 minutes or such? Is there a point when the listener will just be fed up, loose the capability to concentrate and follow? When reading the written word you can just go back one paragraph - or read in "chapters" ... would that work for audio too?

How about audio novellas? Would that seem possible?

I am asking because I do believe strongly in the power of voices - and I wouldn't mind submitting some of then as audios - but unfortunately I am one of the "lengthy" writers, thus I would create like .. 20 minute audios and I just think nobody would like to listen to that (apart from the file size those would be having even if compressing to mp3's I fear)

OK - just curious now to see what others think *S*

Sorry Hecate I think I am guilty... I actually just listen to the stories for you voice... but hearing them as many times as I have I know it fairly well by now.

I think you could submit 15 min long stories at least to me... when I listen to yours I am usually chatting to others while enjoying your voice. I know this doesn't work for anyone else who actually has english as a first language but please do, Mistress.

I dont know If I answered anything or just spouted shit... sorry.

Da chef

A fan - a fan *waving wildly*

*hug* thanks S_C - I'll make sure to have you on my "guinea pig" list if I take a go at any other audio attempts

Ooh. Holding up a hand, both hands actually. Me too.
I want to be a volunteer "editor" for you. Please.
Chef and I can listen together. Though I better warn him, your voice drives me crazy!! And I mean with.. well. umm. nevermind. I am blushing and tingly and going over to listen to your story again. Just for practice mind you.

I just downloaded that realplayer doohicky just to hear your story Hecate. I was not disappointed, wow you have one hellll of a voice on you! It's a good thing you're not in telemarketing over there, those lil German boys would have no idea what hit them...

I need to get a few more thoughts on this - seriously....

are there any people out there who would like to comment on the "maximum" length of an audio? Or is it really of no consequence?

I for myself find that it is a lot due to the style of the "speaker", the voice, intonation (is that a word??)etc. if I feel like listening ( besides the fact of the story content of course). Speaking too fast or a voice i "don't relate to" makes an audio crappy no matter how great the story.

I have been working on the first chapter of my erotic novel as a audio but hell - it was 13 minutes ... and I figured it would be more than an hour to have the whole stuff put as Audio once I just finish reading what I wrote so far - plus it isn't finished as far ars the writing goes yet.... of course I would submit it chapter by chapter - but the first one was by far not the longest one!

Is it worth continuing???
(it is a damn lot of work since I want to have it PERFECT and if the phoone rings when I am at minute 12 all is wasted - or if a dog barks or ... you get my point)

No offense taken if anyone tells me it is a crappy idea!! It would actually save me a lot of time - but if people would think it is enjoyable (besides my "hard core german accent fans *lol*) I sure would like to continue ...

I would listen to you no matter what, but I am a confirmed die hard Mistress fan. But, I hate to say this. I am not sure there are many out there who could listen to you, or anyone that long. I know how hard you work and how long it takes. Yes, the interruptions make you lose the feel of it after awhile. I mean, how many times can you "read" something before the feeling is gone and you lose the edge.
So, even though I would love to hear you read your stories, novels, poems, phone book.... I really feel you need to stick to the shorter things for audio.
Someone hit me, hard, please!!! I can't believe I just said that.

Intonation is a word sweetie

In my little stint into audio recording, I've discovered a few facts that are true for my puter, probably true to yours too, we seem to read about the same speed mostly.

  • 1 typed page = roughly 3 minutes of audio
  • 3 minutes of audio = roughly 10 mb of .wav file
  • 10 mb of .wav file = rougly 1.25 mb of .mp3 file

Dialog, of course, changes the lengths because it takes up a lot of space with less verbiage. I've listened intently to books on tape, unabridged Tom Clancy, John Grisham and WEB Griffin before, so novels don't seem to be a problem if the writing and recording is good. However, people probably don't want to spend an hour online doing nothing but reading.

There is a trick of opening up two browser windows, one to have the story open and one to do whatever one does online normally, but some people don't do it, don't like, or just don't know about it.

I've come to the conclusion that anything over 10mb in an mp3 file is too big simply because it takes so long for me to send it. Shorter stories seem much better.

What would be really cool, though, would be if we could get this actually published to a book on tape kind of deal. I know millions of truckers who would pay good cash for this sort of thing. Length wouldn't be much of an issue either.

The facters that would determine the legnth that I would listen to are: voice quality, content, and how long I had to down load the file. As much as I enjoy hearing Hecate and KMs' voices, some voices are more anoying than sexy (like 'cricket'). The storey itself can hold my attention, especially if it is an orriginal work that is being read my an auther that I have seen here. When I had a 28k connection, I once cooked a meal waiting for a real file to down load. This is I think, the real limiting facter. I just don't think that I would wait for a fifteen minute real file to download.

in layman's terms...

I am most definitely no expert on length, intonation, download size whatever, BUT as a media professional (network television/production side) I know what keeps the average person's attention. With tv, you're pictures have to be tight --compelling, moving (literally and figuratively), colorful or different. But it's a fast medium, so the drawback is that once you see it, it's gone. With newspapers/books/mags the words must be most compelling. pics aren't so important (the only color is on the front pages for a reason). With radio, or audio stories as you're talking about, you get the best of both worlds! colorful words and the voice to add what you'd get from a great story on NPR, or from hearing but not seeing the tv while you cook or whatever.

so, to make this already-too-long-explanation a little more concise, your voice and the greatness of your story will keep one's attention no matter how long it is. Try listening to NPR if you haven't already. When you get a really good story, you'll sit thru buku commercial breaks--people will listen for hours to that stuff! then you won't have to limit yourself by glancing at your watch.

i hope this helps. :p

When My Case Of Puffs is out.......

Duh I gotta say that when My case of Puffs is gone so am I. Well that is unless Killer Muffin is narrating then I may pause the story and bring another case of Puffs upstairs to continue! hehehe even than by the third or fourth case of Puffs I'm kinda done in!! Now if I could get WalMurt to deliver to my upstairs bedroom instead of leaving them in the Garage????

ANiceGuy!!!
