I've always had dark hair which I love and lately it just looks lighter to me so I'd like to color it darker. I've checked around at the local salons and they want $75 to $150 to do it which is a lot of money for me to spend.

I was just wondering if any of you ladies have had any good experiences with the over the counter hair colors that look natural and not out of a box.

I have googled which ones were rated the best but I thought I would get some more opinions from people who may have used them and liked them.

Have you tried a hair dressing school salon? I get mine done at Aveda's local school, and I've saved at least 70% than if I'd go to a salon (and this is by one of the instructors not even a student) and the colour is so wonderful that random people compliment me.

The students have finished hairdressing school and need the hours. They also work hard for their tips and are supervised by pros. Plus you can chose between a student, senior (a couple of years of apprenticeship under their belt) and instructor. It's also really inexpensive. The con is that it often takes twice as long because they want to be damned sure that they get it right.

It's a thought.

In the past I have used both Loreal and John Frieda Precision Foam Colour. Loreal has a strong chemical smell - really strong and it lasts. The colour is always darker than the box too and did not last long.

John Frieda was good, no overpowering scent, goes on easily and colours evenly. Colour lasts longer than Loreal and also true to box.

The one thing I would say is they pretty much were both flat colours with no depth like you will get with a hairdresser colouring. They also seem harder on your hair.
Thank you, some of the ratings I saw had John Frieda ahead of Loreal. Good Housekeeping had Wella Color Charm as their No. 1 choice. It was also the cheapest and they put it ahead of the eSalon that custom makes your color for you. So confusing with how many are out there now.

That's a great idea, I will look into that in my area, thank you FB!

I love coloring my hair, but I would go to sallys or another beauty supply store. They have so many more shades you can choose from as well as additives for toning down reds, brassiness, etc. You can also choose your developer strength. Since you are going darker, I would try a 20 volume. Much less damage to the hair. I also find the beauty supply hair colors to be more true to color than the box ones.

I never thought of a beauty supply store.

The more shades, the better as I only want to go maybe 2 shades darker than it is now.

Thank you!

Vidal Sassoon has the most natural color for me.

Ive tried them all. Too much burgundy except VS.

of course they have discontinued my color so back to the drawing board after I finish up my stockpile.

Of course! Don't they always discontinue it when you find the one that you like?

If you are home colouring, make sure you do the skin test EVERY SINGLE TIME before you colour!
I had been using one brand for years, and then the last time I used it I got a second-degree burn :(
The company had changed the formula.....without putting anything on the box
Even if you have never had any kind of reaction before, do the test regardless.

Thank you for that WQ, I will do that when I decide on one. :)
