Artwork and Images - To Catch A Fancy

I was reminded of an ex-BF's favorite artist today. Caravaggio was a master of light and darkness, both in technique and theme.

Caravaggio's life was brief, dramatic, and violent. As a youth, he was apprenticed to a mediocre painter, to the point that he was largely self-taught. The face of the Medusa is a self-portrait of Caravaggio, and the viewer's perspective is that of Perseus looking into his curved, polished shield at the moment he lops off her head.

When Krakatoa exploded in 1883 its ash cloud wrapped itself around the entire world and hung there for years. In Europe the density of the ash was much lower than at the epicentre but for a decade-and-a-bit the entire world witnessed some spectacular sunsets and sunrises each and every day due to light being manipulated by the airborne debris in the atmosphere. It's thought that the bright orange sunset in this painting is actually a genuine representation of the sky at the time it was painted, 1893.
