Art & Politics

Watching, again, “The Horse Whisperer”, I thought the young girl resembled an actress and so I searched the movie and sure enough, Scarlett Johannsen played the fourteen year old in the movie.

As I read her biography, I noted she campaigned for Sen. John Kerry in 2004, and the thought crossed my mind, why does the Hollywood community, artists in general, tend to the Democrat party, to the left in general.

Also in the film, Robert Redford, whose politics are well known. Not in the film but for background, Barbra Streisand and Jane Fonda, all performers I enjoy, also advocates of left wing politics.

So are about ninety percent of Hollywood performers, artists, musicians, writers, poets, afficionado’s of the ‘finer’ things in life.

Why?

May as well include the same ninety percent of formal educators, at all levels in the field, eighty to ninety percent vote the Democrat party.

But then, so does the same percentage of African Americans and Hispanics and Labor Unions, most of whom do not appreciate the so called, ‘finer’ things in life, to very loosely define a genre.

Why?

Of course, I have an opinion, one which I hope is based on some reason and logic. It has to do with the soft, gentle, caring, feminine side of the nature of man. Which is not a bad thing, please do not misunderstand, I thoroughly appreciate the difference in the sexes and long ago determined the battle would forever be fought but never won or lost.

Back to the film, momentarily, as it is still playing. From a writer’s viewpoint, as are many other films, it made me think about some of my assumptions about crafting a story.

I have always thought that, “plot, plot, plot”, were the three main ingredients in a novel length work. I still think that, but this film reminded me of the many levels of plot and character development and subsidiary themes that flow and weave their way through a story.

I won’t critique, “Horse Whisperer” here, other than to say the theme of the woman, Kristin Scott Thomas, the child, Grace, (Scarlett) and Robert Redford, the city, the cattle ranch, animals, society, spaces, et cetera, plus the cinematography and the general tone of the film were a pleasure, a continuing and repeatable pleasure to enjoy.

Always curious as to where the denizens of the AH, will take my thoughts.

Well I won't comment on you political stance, only thank you for reminding me of a film I really ought watch again. You're right on the plot business, sub-plots are essential to my way of writing.

Everytime I see your avatar I think: "I know the word 'propinquity', means, 'nearness', of some sort, esoteric, in a way.

But what do you intend by, 'proquinguus'?

thanks

It applies to time, moving in and out of time... in the sense of nearness. I've spent much of my life being slightly out of syncronisation - it fits.

It was quite an amazing book, actually... different from the movie...

Scarlett is a dream...

They're left because they are artists... :)
