Does the name of the thread starter indicate the probable mood and temper of the contributors?

Even on the odd occasion when p_p_man starts a well reasoned and thoughtful thread it quickly descends to an unruly slanging match.

Some of Lavender's threads turn into questions over her motives and personal insults rather than a discussion of the issue she raised.

Busybody's threads are usually blasted for their extreme views without thought to the content.

Do we go into certain posters threads looking for a fight?

Are there certain posters who would automatically get your hackles up even if they were only posting the weather forecast?

Bluespeaker

Not surprisingly, I dont see my threads.....thoughts.....ideas.....comments......as extreme.....

While I ususally try very hard to add elements in there that arouse passion......and it works.....

To the detriment of my ideas......those elements.....prvent coherent discussion.....

Maybe I outa cut it out.

I think some people specifically search out threads by certain posters for what ever reasons they may have. I also think many people spoil for arguments. The when they no longer have footing they start to lash out in hopes to distract from themselves and their comments.

The problem with some posts is that people read into them what they the person reading puts into them not the original intent of the person creating the thread. Writing is open to interpretation. Many times it is warped and twisted so far from the first thought.

When a person has opposing or strong view points many times people feel a need to beat their own opinions into that individual because they either don't like that person or their opinions. Just because you don't agree with someone or their pov doesn't mean that their stance isn't important to them and in so deserving of some respect (I think most people are deserving of respect, note the word most). Tearing them up for it is childish as far as I'm concerned. There are many ways of making someone see things your way without attacking them.

I seek out caly's posts just to look at her picture. I don't know whether I'd say it gets my "hackles" up ... I've never heard it called that before.

sure, there are automated emotional responses when certain names appear on the board. But no one gets my hackles up. It's an anonymous world, cyberspace, and that's the fun of it.

Just like in real life, all sorts of people are represented. And in real life, nobody gets along with everybody. I can't see how some anonymous online persona could piss me off.

I'm hear because it's fun. and winding people up is fun, as is banter. It's like the pub/café.

So many 'discussion' threads are reduced to mud-slinging, because most people would rather banter.

The only thing I take issue with is hard-core racism in somebody like Busybody's threads & posts. So I wind up.

Kooley

Can you post to my comments that YOU consider racist?

No, I dont eXXXpect a cogent response......You MULTI CULTURED EURO EUnich.....;)

As you sow, so shall you reap.

People remember. If someone makes a habit of going after people, those other people remember, and may just return the favor.

It's not just personalities either. Making a post casting aspersions on the reasons why some people are exploring BDSM, it not the same thing as starting a thread about soft drinks...

And if you do decide to post these "racist" posts......please eXXXplain why in your opinion they are racist

I don't have the time or inclination to amuse you by searching for all your outbursts. However, there IS this quote, from yesterday I believe.

If we are gonna clean out the shit from the HUMAN RACE......lets kill millions of: Africans, Chinese, Indians, Muslims/Arabs, French
I would say......a billion or two less of these wouldnt be bad at all....

I don't deem it necessary to explain why this could perhaps be construed as racism.

I can only speak for myself but I have a tendency to expect certain things out of certain posters but I never go into a thread with the thought to attack them. Now, have I slipped, absolutley but it was not the first thought.

One of the reasons I tend to not start threads is because I have nothing of value to start one up with and I would probably unintentionally offend someone who didn't have the same views as myself (the Lavy school of posting).

I personally like the passion, though I very rarely agree with the content, of which, for instance, Busybody posts with.

Well, RACISM is defined as certain races being inferior then others.....

In my mind The Africans.....have shown over time they CONTRIBUTE NOTHING.

Muslims/Arabs contribute war, terror and hate.

French contribute fries and not much else.....

None of em would be missed....

They are sub human

Oh, here is another post in the same vein...

But racism, busybody, is the perception of other races as being inferior to one's own.

According to psychological studies, the vast majority of racists are found in society's lowest orders. Uneducated, lacking in self-confidence and unable to rise up the ladder of success, racists see no other option than blaming others for their own problems and reaching the false conclusion that they, in fact, are superior to those they choose to hate. When, in fact, the opposite is true.

Oh, and 'French' fries as you people call them, were invented in Belgium.

This would be one of the times I like the passion but am repulsed by the content.

It is rainy here today. Live with it. :)

(and yes...that happens all the time. A usual "fluff" poster could post a serious thread yet it turns into WWIII.)

Lets face it

Africa has been the same for the past 5,000 years.....

When the Blacks too over in SA and Rhodesia......DEATH STARVATION and MAYHEM was the result

The only place where there is SLAVERY.....is AFRICA

Starvation is a POLICY of an AFRICAN leader, MUGABE

AIDS is rampant in AFRICA......

If they were to all die.....who would miss em?

MUSLIMS/ARABS have been the terror masters and murderers in our generation.....etc etc etc

But we say they are equal to us in stature and culture?

NAIVE and PC thinking!

The French of course are another category

I always read Lavy's threads.

I still have busybody on ignore, where it has been since its comments on Freakygurl's ADHD thread (can't remember if it is male or female, sorry.)

pp_man is on unofficial ignore. I may run into his posts on other people's threads but I can't remember the last time I opened a thread he started. Why bother? The are all the same thread over and over.

Yes, "who" starts the thread matters to me if you are someone I already have an opinion about.

Read this.....not that I expect you all to.....

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION:
More blacks believe apartheid country ran better (Rory Carroll, December 13 2002, The Age)

"The number of black people who believe life was better under South Africa's apartheid regime is growing, according to a survey published yesterday.

In a rebuke to the African National Congress government, more than 60 per cent of all South Africans polled said the country was better run during white minority rule.

One in five black people interviewed gave the regime that jailed Nelson Mandela and denied them the vote a positive rating..."

:D

(That was busybody's post above, by the way. At least what I can see of it.

To a degree, there are certain posters I know not to read. Not because they get me riled, but because I am now indifferent to the silly, childish, inflammatory and often vile content of their posts. It's pointless, boring, and too damn typical.

I don't understand why anyone would want to "beat their pov" into anyone, why is it even important to do so? Why would you care to?

Caly commented on respecting others right to express their pov, and while I agree with that notion, it isn't realistic. Its a given that we all have the right to post, but seldom are we respected and treated fairly. As soon as you express an opposing view, or some slightly different way of seeing things, the war is on. Even if you speak only from your own viewpoint and experiences and don't address anyone in particular or question/challenge another, the name calling and demeaning , childish "sticks and stones" behaviors ensue. Hell, for some, you don't even have to do anything more than show up, and the war is on. I've given up on the belief that most will act like adults, and debate and discuss on a level that is challenging, interesting, and stimulating. Or funny as hell. :) It's way too easy for people to make it personal, and at this point, it's all down hill.

In all the countless threads about "don't feed the trolls", the threads of flirting and fluff and sexual journey topics that are redundant as hell for some, and an entirely new world for others, and the "this kind of thread zzzzzzz's me into oblivion" and the "don't start threads about [insert topic to not start threads about]" and all the flame wars, has one single thing changed, or even improved slightly? No, and it isn't going to. People are going to say and do whatever they damn well feel like doing, you can't change it. You have no right to even expect an internet message board with membership of 138, 666 to spin just the way you want it to. You may as well just learn a little tolerance, or accept that you're going to spend your time here spazzing like a top. You have no more rights than anyone else, and for every right you think you have, another thinks they have it, too. And they do. Just like on a playground, or politics, or gender wars, or any and every other aspect of interacting with others, there will be be the power struggles, the bullies, the good guy/bad guy "shoot em up's".
It's really pretty funny stuff.

When I consider that this is a free forum and that no one is holding a gun to my head and forcing me to post here, that no one really gives a damn about me other than my friends and no one here can hold me when I meet up with a "boo boo", and no one on this site or anywhere on the internet owes me a damn thing, well, in the end, it's up to me to be responsible for my experience here, not others.

How many jelly beans are in ajar that can hold 10 metric litres of Water?

I want to win the stuffed bear!

So many different ideas.

Caly I agree with your sentiment although I can't see it work in practice with the diversity of characters here.

Cool You enjoy having fun and poking at peoples pomposity and pricking their egos. You certainly poked at BB on here!

Busybody Hey this thread was about arguments, it didn't need to descend into one. Anger management? And thank you for having the cojones to come into a thread that was always going to include criticism of you.

Intrigued I cannot argue with one word of that post. Thank you.

Lioness The lady who started the European thread and kept it going without any real animosity despite many diverse views. I salute you.

I wonder what comes next?
