Aren't lesbians radically different from gay men?

You often see "gay and lesbian" said as if it were one word. But isn't lesbianism radically different from male homosexuality? Why do we lump them together?

A lesbian friend of mine said it was nothing more than "political bullshit". Her opinion of gay men is unprintable, even here. Certainly she and her lover couldn't be more different in lifestyle and values than the gay men I know. Sorry if this offends, but the latter seem to be stuck in a form of adolescent male sexuality, where sensation trumps common sense.

Thoughts?

Pragmatism makes strange bedfellows.

Of course they're radically different, ya lugnut, lesbians have no Y chromosomes.

Socially, and politically, they have more commonality of issues they face, though, and the alliance is to a certain extent even more natural than it is pragmatic.

glam had a cool joke about gay men and lesbian women that made me smile i might try and find it later
