If you deleted a positive remark I made, I'd not read any of your work again. The reader wanted to let you know they liked it, and you said who gives a shit what you think. I'd say it's close to someone wishing you a happy birthday, and you answer them with, fuck off.

I always say deleting negative comments(unless they're just pure hate) is a sign of being thin skinned. Deleting a positive one because you might not agree for some reason is downright sad.

My feeling has always been if you're posting on a site like this and allowing comments-and some authors ask for them in their author notes-then you need to be ready to accept whatever comes along, otherwise just shut them off.

I basically agree. I've deleted maybe one comment in the six years I've been here (Laurel has deleted some without any encouragement from me). I deleted it because it was (literally) obscene and I just didn't want that crap on my story page. Other than that, I've deleted nothing. I've left all the other nasty crap up, in part because I consider it an interesting part of my story history.

I don't understand deleting, or being insulted by, good comments, even if they're very brief. My attitude is that any kindness, no matter how small, a reader has bestowed on my story is something I value, and it would be spiteful and arrogant to delete a nice comment.

Its so contrived to use the word binary.
If you notice I added unless they're just pure hate, although I leave those too, figure let everyone see the idiot they are. But comments that say they just don't care for the story or you might need an editor or anything reasonable but not flattering getting deleted, but all the "bestest story" ever-which we all know is never true- shows the person can't handle anything that's not glowing praise.

The type that needs the safe place from harsh words I suppose.

Oops I'm being binary again, aren't I? Damn that 80's honestly and ability to deal with adversity I was raised with.

Good way to see it. a positive remark is like a well meaning thought. I'll add again that often times people lament here how few people comment at all, so to start deleting comments that are decent is counter productive and a slap in the face to the people willing to do it.

Of course that's if the person who claims they do this is telling the truth, so we'll file it under probably not.

My attitude to stupid comments saying nothing is the same as my attitude to dog turds on a front lawn. I clean them up, but your neighbourhood may differ.

Not a god damn thing wrong with deleting comments.

Life is too short to deal with those baby carrot keyboard warriors.

I delete comments that are hatred and non-constructive.

Disagree with my stories is fine, as long as you aren't being an asshole about it, your comment will stay.

Not being familiar with these things, I had anonymous comments turned on on my story, and the first comment I got was "what a stupid story", or words to that effect, which is a clear sign of a stupid reader. So I turned off anonymous comments and deleted it.

I'm pretty self-critical, but when I think that the story is good enough to post, I want as many people as possible to enjoy it. So I'll obviously delete negative comments, and spoiler comments too. Also I think its fine to delete pointless comments. It's up to me.

Had a look at it. It's not actually a BTB story as it looks like at first (guy gets divorced because wife is cheating, husband blameless but work meant try didn't spend time together, he's good with kids...). It then goes on to him being masculine by saving a woman unconscious in a car crash and they're snowed in together. Cue quick thinking, sex and HAE. It's a solid enough story though it skips over her characterization a bit more than I'd like once she's awake. You could remove all the LW tropes from it and it would still work.

The 1 stars seem to be the cheating wife ones.
