Well we had to be able to actually see the suckers squirm when we did horrible things to them, didn't we? You can't watch a snail truly suffer with a shell on.

Slugs are acutally snails that have donated their shells to other slugs that are snail wannabe's. There are only a fixed number of shells around so the possesion of a shell, or lack thereof, is a means of determining 'compassion'.
