Why are promiscuous men in American society referred to as studs while if the same activity is engaged by the female she's a slut? Is it biological? Has birth control and abortion upset the natural balance of things?

it's, unfortunately, a male dominated world... simple as that... it's not right, but that's how it is...

My 2 cents worth for ya............

Due to the fact that this is a society filled with people who love SEX yet seem to SHUN it, i.e. men being studs and women are sluts.......it is backwards and wrong. People (notice no gender reference there) who love sex have nothing wrong with them.........it is only society who has the problem with it.

I have often wondered that question myself in highschool. the jocks were always praised for how many gals they laid in a year, while if a girl put out she was easy or a slut. I never understood this.

FEAR THE POWER OF THE PUSSY!!! Men fear the power of the pussy, the awesome multiorgasmic capabilities of this wonderful sexual organ. Okay, that's what my 8th grade biology teacher espoused, but he was a pervo anyway.

I don't know why, but I do recall an essay on the topic claiming that it's due to the fact that women's promiscuity is so easily discerned by pregnancy, whereas a man faces no obvious consequences. The sexual revolution only happen 30ish short years ago, not really a great deal of time considering the span of time sexuality in women has been surpressed. I think these attitudes will go away eventually, but not for a while. Some things take time.

Is it biological?

I think it is partly "biological," but mostly, it is patriarchal.

The biological aspect comes in because of the need to suppress competition from other males. Any woman who allows "Not-You" a chance to "propagate the species" is obviously not looking for the best genetic material and is therefore somehow defective herself.

The patriarchal nature of the Christianity dominated western civilization we live in, demands that women behave in such a way that paternity be unquestioned. A "loose woman" or "slut" can't be trusted to bear only her husband's children, and is therefore "bad"

Biology has more to do with the "Stud" side of the situation. Even though a "stud" should be perceived as a threat, there is an instictive reconition of the "superiority" of "mighty hunter" who can attract many women to prove his virility. In the same way that the hunter who speared the biggest mammoth was revered for his bravery, and professional athletes are idolized today, someone who can do more of something or do something better is recognised for his prowess.

I think birth control has started to change "the natural order" of things, but AIDS and other STDs are working just as hard to counter that trend. Unfortunately, the "mighty hunter" syndrome seems to be a stronger image than the proper image of a fool stomping through a minefield.

I think some of it might be behavioral, at least from the women's pov. I know since I've had children that it's difficult to switch back and forth between loving mother and sexy fleshpot. It might be just as difficult for a man to think of his wife/the mother of his children in the dual roles too. (Of course, I may be WAY off base with that one.)

Then again, maybe this has nothing to do with the topic at all. God, I should get to bed.

WH hit it on the head...

I too think it's mostly patriarchal. There's a good book by Anne Dickson, "The Mirror Within" which examines how women were transformed from mere mortals into the vanguard of morality, wholesomeness, etc. I'm a little rusty on this, but I seem to recall it had a lot to do with the purity of the bloodline and the recognition that unlike men (who apparently think with their dicks...did I say that?) women are sensual, sexual creatures with a mysterious capacity for erotic pleasure. It echoes Luce Irgerary (French feminist/philospher) who says a woman's whole body is sexual and sensorial. Dickson believes that one goal of the "Church" was to counter this by elevating women to semi-goddess stature to help ensure they "behaved". Aphrodite was sent into exile.

Oh well...hope that was modestly interesting.

One of the nice things about the sexual revolution is that the term slut has lost some of its sting. Some women, me included, are PROUD of our sexual capacity, and we will even call ourselves slut just in fun. It has become more a positive word, like stud has always been. Just my opinion.
