They dropped without warning, searing the land into desolation. Cities fell to the searing temperatures and radiation. Humanity fell into almost extinction, those who survived made new cities deep under the ruined earth. Banding together to do the one thing they still had left, survive. The Underground life was hard, many succumbed to the trials early on. The sick and injured struggling to win a losing fight without antibiotics or other medical aid. Many chose the easy way out and took their own life. Children were left orphans, parents saw their children incinerated when the bombs fell.

Katherine Bates was one of those, she relieves that night every night she tries to sleep. The images of her 2 year old daughter screaming as the radiation poison drained her small body. Watched as the life slowly ebbed from her eyes, crying for her to make it better. make the pain go away. Katherine, now called simply Kat,held her daughter as the final breathes escaped her tiny lungs. Watched as the light died in her eyes at that final gasp for air. Her world seemed to freeze at that point, pushing herself forward just to try and stop this from happening from anyone else.

She had tried to take her own life, but stopped at the last minute. The blade had been poised over her wrist, one small cut already made. Something stopped her, something almost primal in the scream that tore from her throat. She couldn't die now,her daughter would have died in vain. She had wrapped her arms around her knees and cried, deep heart wrenching cries. It was also the last time she had cried. She had pulled herself together and moved forward. She lived in one underground city with several hundred others. The air had no longer been toxic and the hunt for shelter and supplies had begun. She taught herself to shoot a gun, fight like a common street thug. It had saved her life several times already.

She bore the scars from past encounters, the scar along her neck was the closest she had come to death. A band of nomads had ambushed her small hunting group, the knife had missed her jugular by mere centimeters. Her once waist length blonde hair now cut shoulder length. Her eyes once vibrant and green seemed empty and haunted. Her small petite size now made more muscular with the training. But not in an manly way, firmer in some places than others. More defined than she had ever recalled. But she didnt care. She lived one day at a time and if today was her last then so be it.

Today she sat alone on the empty supply crate outside of the entrance. The voices of those inside faint, footsteps came and went. Her hand rested on her rifle wondering where the next supply of ammo would come from.Bullets were running out along with what food and clothing rations they had. Another run was going to be needed, but not many was ready to venture out after last attack. They had lost 6 men to the nomads,5 more were seriously injured. That left only herself and 8 others able to go on. they would have to leave 5 behind to help protect the others.

Her hand tightened as she heard the footsteps approching then relaxed slightly when she saw it was, Ian. He had helped her learn what she needed to know about survivng, had covered for her when she had episodes from her nightmares that left her shaking and disoriented. He had tried to move things further but she had stopped the advances,he didnt know the whole story behind her self imposed isolation. He didnt know she had held her daughter while she died. All he knew was she had nightmares and that was all.

"I suppose we need to go out again." She said as she looked out over the dead city in front of her. "Things are running out to find, the nomads make it harder each time."

Ian looked at her then out over the landscape, nodding slowly. His eyes turning back to her prfile as he dropped down onto the crate next to her. "Yeah, gonna have to move everyone soon. It gets shorter and shorter each time we find something." he said softly, his dark hair falling across his eyes,a strong hand reached up and brushed it back.

Kat nodded, sighing at the thought. Some of the survivors would not survive the next move. Sliding from the crate she shouldered her rifle, turning to look at Ian. Her 5 foot 4 body much shorter than his 6 foot plus one. "I am going to walk perimeter, head back and get things set up to head out in the morning. We will give one last check before uprooting everyone." She said as she turned and walked off,she could feel his eyes on her back as she moved away.

While the apocalypse was a time of obvious distress for the world, to Ian it was practically a relief. Ian had grown up in the perfect set of circumstances by any standard. His parents were loving and supportive and he had a great childhood. In high school he was a three sport athlete and captain of the debate team. With that he had all the brawn and the charisma that go along with it. Despite having the world practically spoon fed to him he always had an affinity for helping people.

His success continued in college and he was ultimately accepted into law school where he excelled as well, graduating towards the top of his class. He had a keen sense in the court room and parlayed that and his desire to give people a second chance into being one of the top young criminal defense attorneys in his area. He had everything. However, he was a thorn in the side to prosecutors and when a peculiar set of circumstances came up he was wrongfully accused of a crime. The prosecutors along with some dirty cops made sure the charges stuck and Ian was set to spend practically the rest of his life in prison. His crashed from perfect to outcast in a matter of minutes. While Ian had dedicated his life on giving people second chances the world wasn’t going to afford him the same opportunity. The young man that was so intent on helping people went from happy go lucky to being filled with hate overnight.

Instead of going to prison Ian used his contacts he had obtained as a criminal defense attorney to go into hiding. A few guns, a few contacts and a lot of charisma will take you a long way on the streets. In the three years between that fateful day and the apocalypse Ian had learned a lot. He learned how to shoot a gun, he learned how to use a knife, he learned how to con people and he could execute a burglary to near perfection. He was really only biding time until he could extract revenge on the people that had done this to him.

So, when everyone else was running and hiding from the fallout and crying mourning the loss of their lives as they knew it, Ian was three years past that point in the grieving process. He wasn’t fearful of what lied ahead as everyone else was, he couldn’t help but smile at the opportunity that had presented itself. While everyone else was committing suicide, Ian was using that time to secure resources and continue honing the skills he’d learned over the past three years.

While others were seeking to rebuild communities Ian retracted. He did what he had to do to survive. He lied to, stole from and killed anyone who threatened his survival. He particularly targeted the people that brought him down in his previous life. Former judges, attorneys and cops were his favorite targets.

He was out on one of his hunting expeditions one day, fresh off a kill of one such enemies when he saw another hunting party. Hunting parties of civilians were such easy targets that Ian almost didn’t feel right attacking them. When he approached the top of the hill he looked at the party and noticed a young female trailing the party. That is the first time he noticed her. He raised his knife to execute her just as he’d done hundreds of times before.

As he did so she turned to look over her shoulder and her blonde hair blew into her face and something glimmered in her eye. He stopped mid throw, something he’d never done before. He had a knot in his throat. He hesitated for a second. He did not know what came over him. As she stood there still unaware of his presence he raised his knife a second time to end her life.

That’s the last thing he remembered. He next woke up in her encampment with her standing over him. While he was planning an attack on her someone had attacked him! She spun a tale to him about how her group had saved his life and she thought he’d be grateful, but, the fact that she’d distracted him only infuriated him. He couldn’t believe he’d gone against his instincts and it had almost cost him his life. And it was her fault!

As she sat over him doctoring his wounds he thought to himself that she’d saved herself this time, but, it won’t buy her leniency if they run into each other again. He was going to bide his time until after everyone was asleep and then slip away from camp.

That night, he did just that. Once everyone was asleep he gathered his stuff and began to slip away. As he did she grabbed his arm. He swung toward her throat with his knife, but, stopped just short as he realized she was still asleep. He started to pull away to leave, but, for some reason couldn’t bring himself to do it. There was something about the way she held onto his arm that reminded him of a feeling he had felt before. Like something he remembered from the distant past. Like she was grasping not for her own safety, but, for something much bigger than herself, for something selfless. He wanted so much to hate her right then, but, with her blonde hair flailing in her face and her chest gasping for air he felt something he had not felt in years . . . even if he couldn’t describe it.

He dropped his belongings and kneeled beside her as she seized. Now he was clinging to her like he needed her touch as much as she needed his. He still had the knife in his hand but he looked around and was now using it to defend her instead of attack her. He couldn’t believe he was letting anyone get to him like this much less her. He sat there and stared into space long after the nightmare had stopped trying to reconcile in his mind what was happening. Eventually he gave up and collapsed beside her and held her through the night.

Since that first night Ian has fought his emotions. There are days that he feels like he needs her like he needs air and food and there are days that he regrets not throwing the knife the first time he saw her. However, because of the rising level of conflict outside the encampment as the days and weeks drew on it was becoming clear that Ian needed her and her friends . . . even on the days that he did not want her.

With that he half heartedly listened to her plan with his head down to the ground so he wouldn’t have to see the hope in her eye. He listened as she spoke of walking the perimeter and threw his knife into the sand to show her his frustration and keep his tough façade. He nodded tacitly with his eyes fixed solidly on his knife on the ground. As she walked away he slowly picked up his knife and punched one of the crates in frustration. He then fixed his eyes on the back of her head as she walked away . . .

”God I wish she wasn’t so beautiful” he thought to himself . . .”

As Kat walked away from Ian she wondered about him and his intentions. She knew he wasn't someone to take llightly,he could be as deadly as he was protective. She saw his mean side the night they captured him,she knew he had been close to hurting her, maybe even killing her. Since then he has stood beside her, seen her at her worst. Still she kept him from knowing her deepest secrets. If she had been in a different frame of mind, and the world was different maybe she could have let herself care more for him. Maybe she already did,but fought it down.

She rounded the corner of the crumbled building on her left and stopped. A small noise caught her ear, cocking her head to one side she listened. In this desolate world there wasnt many sounds,so any sound made one stop. She rested her hand on the butt of her rifle pulling it from her shoulder as she moved forward slowly. The rock hard slam between her shoulders took the breath from her as she fell forward. Her rifle sliding free from her hands as she skidded on the dirt and gravel. She rolled as the sharpened stake buried itself in the ground next to her,her feet coming up and around instinctively.

She felt and heard the grunt as she connected with the body over her,yet the man lumbering over her continued forward. his hands wrapping around her throat and lifting her from the ground. Shaking her like a rag doll, his features scarred from the radition exposure he endured. His eyes wild and maniacal. He grinned and the toothless gape made her stomach churn as he leaned close to her face. Slobber dropping on her skin, one had sliding from her neck to trail along her collarbone and shoulder.

"Pretty..very pretty."he mumbled as he held her by the neck off the ground. She fought for breath as her feet found and connected with his shins. he grunt of pain just got her another hard shake as the world swam around her, blackness threatening. He lifted one hand and then the left side of her head exploded in pain, the the world went black.

The man looked at her limp body in his hand, easing the pressure on her throat as he shifted, tossing her up and over his shoulder. He knelt down and lifted her rifle in his free hand. turning he started off across the charred ground towards the remains of a burned out forest. Laughing to himself at his catch, still mumbling how pretty she was. Shayne was oblivious as he carried her further away from the safety of her people, was unaware of when he stopped and dropped her down onto the ground. Unaware of when he bent over her and ran a scarred and dirty hand over her chest, along her sotmach to rest a hand over her mound.

He then stood and turned, but not before tying her hands and feet tightly together. Lifting the rifle he left the crop of wood he had formed into a makeshift shelter and vanished into the darkness. When she stirred she couldnt move, her wrists and ankles burning from the tightness of the ropes. Each twist dug them into her skin deeper, she tried to look around her for some markings of where he had taken her and why.

He watched her dissappear from his sight, grabbed a couple of his favorite knives and began to sharpen him. He usually carried a pistol for emergencies, but, knives were his weapon of choice. He could be just as deadly and make far less noise. He also knew that as time went on bullets would become more and more valuable. For now he'd leave the shooting to Kat and her half-wit friends.

Once his knives were sharp he put them in his vest and holstered his pistol. He thought Kat had been gone longer than she should have to circle the perimeter. "She's probably on the other side of camp cackling with the rest of the hens," he thought to himself. He walked across camp infuriated with them, particularly her, and was ready to get them back on task before it got dark outside.

He walked across camp and when he got to the rest of the group he noticed she wasn't with them as he anticipated. His rage for her turned termporarily to fear as he rushed out to try to determine if something had happened. The group called to him to ask him where he was going, but, their inquiring was only met with a passing glare as he retraced the perimeter that she would have walked in anticipation of their expedition.

It wasn't long until he found the spot she had fallen. There was definately signs of a struggle and footprints heading towards the forest in the charred ground. "Damnit!" he mumbled. He stood up knowing he should just walk away . . . to live life on his own again. He couldn't do it, though. He stood up, sighed and began his trek into the forest. He'd was angry at her perpetually. Most people that caused him to become angry once didn't make it much longer, but, this was a different kind of anger. He had no idea why she got such special treatment, but, for now he couldn't make his feet walk away.

The rest of the group started to follow but he turned to them and snarled "STAY!" The last thing he needed was this group of idiots drawing attention to them if he was going to search for her in the forrest, especially if this went after dark. It wasn't long until he reached the forest, but, finder her would be a different story.

He wandered in the forrest until after dark. He had to be very careful, sometimes the nomads hung in groups and sometimes they were solo. As far as he was concerned they weren't very smart or sneaky but there were a lot of them so avoiding them was an impossible proposition at times. He knew he had only seen one set of foot prints leaving their camp so this had to be a brave one and couldn't be too far inside the forrest. He figured after dark he'd do something to give himself away. Ian just had to bide his time and hope Kat was ok in the interim.

His hunch was right. As he wandered he found a lone nomad with Kat tied up. He found a defensive position so he could watch without anyone being able to sneak up on him and observed to make sure there weren't more. He saw she was awake and moving. Shortly after he got there the nomad began to touch Kat. He wasn't sure what was about to happen, whether he was going to rape her, eat her or beat her, but, he was sure it wasn't going to be good.

The rage flaired again. He gripped his favorite knife and reared back to throw it. When he went to end the life of the creatures life he hesitated again, but, it wasn't like when he hesitated for Kat. He could have killed the creature instantly as was his custom, but, instead he stuck the knife in the creatures lung. It brought the creature to it's knees and made it where it couldn't scream, but, it was very much alive.

He rushed down to the creature and pulled a second knife. When he got there he simply kicked it in the head and began looking around the camp practically ignoring Kat. He ran the knife down the face of the creature. He knew it was in pain, just waiting to die but he wasn't going to give it that satisfaction. He walked around and found some rope that was left over from stringing up Kat and then strung the nomad up. He kicked it and beat it intermittently before sticking the knife to the creatures throat and ending its life. He left the dead nomad strung from the tree to dissuade any further intruders.

It was only then that he walked over to Kat. He reached up and cut the foot ties and her hand ties.

"I'm not going to play babysitter for you your whole life," he said almost without thinking. He then began rummaging around the camp for food knowing they'd probably be stuck in the forest for the night.

Kat stared up at Ian as she rubbed her wrists, then her anger burst forward. She moved over to him and hit him square in the chest. "I dont need a babysitter, nor did I ask for you to be one."She hissed at him as she galred at him. Her chest heaving, her heart hammering. "I dont need anyone to watch out for me,let alone someone who hadtried to kill me."She hissed at him realising she had let it slip she knew he was really trying to kill her the first time they met.

She turned and walked away a short distance, then stopped, looking back at him. "Yeah,I know what your were planning then. Can feel the rage falling off of you even now. You will try it all over again iif you get the chance. Thats just the way this world is now."She said the last softer as she began to walk off back towards base. She didnt know why she felt like crying, like something in her had shifted. She shouldnt care how he felt but yet she did.

She swore the day her daughter died that she would never let herself care for anything or anyone again because it never lasted. Something always happened to change that. She stopped at the edge of the ruined forest, her eyes gazed out over the ruined city, they base they now called home for what it was worth. She felt the shift in the air,her hair stood up on her neck just before she felt the first explosion. She was thrown backwwards as the base they were heading to went up in a ball of fire. More explosion quickly followed.

She struggled to her feet, she could feel the heat from the blasts on her face, almost burning her skin. Her hands curled into fists as she watched the one place she had called home for so long vanish in a fireball of flame and screams of those that was caught inside. She started to run then felt the hard arms wrap around her waist and hold her still, bringing her backwards hard against his chest. She could hear Ian breathing in her ear as he held her from rushing into certain death.
