I get terrible shin splints. I think that is why.
Stretch your calves. Toes on the edge of a stable corner and use the drop off to extend the stretch downward. Come out of it by raising your heels.
I'm sure you're already aware but muscle groups work in pairs. Calves (3 muscles) and the muscle along the front of your fib and tib.

We don’t have stables. Would a shed do?
