The Bush Administration wants to create a new post: War Czar. We already have a Drug Czar and a Homeland Security Czar. Now he wants a War Czar to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So far no one wants the post.

Retired Marine Gen. John "Jack" Sheehan, a former top
NATO commander who rejected the White House overture, told the [Washington] Post: "The very fundamental issue is, they don't know where the hell they're going."

My question is: Isn't this what the Secretary of Defense is supposed to do? Have we become so war-crazed that we need both a Secretary of Defense and a special "War Czar" to handle our battles? What's Next? A Global Warming Denial Czar? An Immigration Czar? Are we becoming a Czarocracy?

I'm waiting until the Czar Czar post opens up to send in my resume.

Remember what happened to Czar Nicholas II?

Not a title I would want in front of my name.:D

Uh... I believe the Pres is the Commander in Chief.

Americans children are dying... could possibly he pay fucking attention to it.

A War Czar... are we in a mother-fucking sci-fi novel!

'A' War Czar?

And why 'czar?' It is as if the US has become imperial . . . ;)

Egypt, Rome, Khan's Mongols, the US . . . history has shown that when there is one singular power in the world, that power does not last long. We (the USA) are now the flypaper. The biggest kid on the block is always the most tempting target.

We can make whatever appointments, take whatever actions, assert ourselves however we wish . . . but it really will not avail this great old US of A.

Sooner or later, we will fall, and someone else will take our place, War Czar or no.

Precisely, I hear Czar and I think despotism. I've no trouble with monarchy in principle, but not autocracy, and as my friend Sev puts it, this is no country for Kings, Czars, or anything of the like.

Well, if you don't count His Majesty, King George II of the House of Bush. :D

I keep expecting him to start using the royal "we."

It shall happen...just you wait.

Another thought, what the bloody hell is the President supposed to be, if not in command of the armed forces according to this country's Constitution? What happened to Harry Truman and "the buck stops here"?

Nope, this thinking requires an MBA.
The solution to any fuck-up is to add another bubble below yourself on the org chart, whose responsibility it is to fix things. When they can't, then you can take action by replacing them. The important thing is, you've assigned the responsibility to someone else.

I need to go to MBA school.

That responsibility was abrogated back in the 60's in favor of cabinets, committees and think tanks.

We are now goverend by a bunch of bureaucrats and government lifers who want to keep thir jobs no matter what.

They look for a parade and get in front of it.

Discouraged yet? ;)

WAIT A MINUTE!!!

Does this come with one of them GOLDEN PARACHUTES?

If it does, I am so IN!

Actually sounds like the UK, too, these days. Except that it is SUPPOSED to be governed by cabinet and Parliament, not just the Prime Minister. He is still supposed to assume ultimate responsibility, however, not that I see much of that from Mr. Blair.

And I was already discouraged, thank you very much.

Well, best to learn that now. ;)

Why should we be discouraged? Politics have been the same since 1963, after all . . . we should be used to 'business as usual' by now.

Unfortunately "business as usual" involves all the breaks for corporations, special interest groups and select individuals currently in favor with whoever is in charge.

And the little guy gets the hind tit--or sucks the wet rag.

Just don't seem fair...:(

With the proposed creation of a "War Czar" the Bush II admin has added another hash mark to its long and distinctive record of managerial incompetence. This "idea" strikes me as being akin to re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Rumple Foreskin

I propose an addendum to the proposed War Czar.

In keeping of both 'War' & 'Czar', if the volunteer gets fired, he or she must immediately slap on the combat beiges and deploy to front-line Iraq.

War Czar?

Isn't that what the Chief Commander (i.e. President) is for?

I have figured this out!

Gonzales and Co. promised one their loyal supporters who has a law degree a nice cushy federal prosecutor job, but since those positions are falling through, they've created a new one just for him.

War by legal committee...awesome!

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to stop waging war on third world countries?

It's already been established that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq made the terrorism situation worse and created a far more dangerous world for us to live in.

Shouldn't we be learning a lesson from that?

The more I hear and read about that moron, the more convinced I become that the Secret Service will have to pry him out of the White House with a crowbar in January 2009, while he screams, "I refuse to abdicate!"

get your count down clock here:

End of Bush Countdown Clock.

"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power."
Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard's Almanack of 1738

I'm so not a fan of the word Czar, in any context.
