Another day at the bird feeder

I was walking and heard a squirrel alarm call the other day...but there was no squirrel around. I looked up and it was a Northern Mockingbird making a perfect squirrel alarm call, over and over, from atop a utility pole. They are in the mimic thrush group, after all, but I never heard one imitating a squirrel before, just other bird calls.

After reading an article about hummingbirds two weeks ago, I cleaned my feeders and have seen quite a few hummingbirds feeding. They are dashing all over the place.

Pretty slow winter so far. A downey pudwhacker stopped by but mostly I'm spending ss$ feeding sparrows. :)

We've still got 3 or 4 hummingbirds battling it out for residency. I think last year was a two way battle for winter supremacy but we typically only have one winter resident.

We relocated to Idaho a few years ago from Florida and my parents followed. They got a nice place and she's always loved her birdfeeders. So we set her up a couple of nice ones and she's been enjoying them but ...

I got a text from her recently. "Holy cow! I think the only thing I'm accomplishing by having these feeders, is ringing the dinner bell for the hawks!"

In southern Idaho, it's mostly desert and farm/ranch country and we have more raptors than any place I've ever seen. Everything from kestrels to eagles. The local falcons are queued up, taking turns, turning her backyard into a killing field. Especially now that snow has fallen.

I have a flock of about 40 sparrows. Exotic! :)
