OBITUARY (The Times, May 2002)

Today we mourn the passing of an old friend, by the name of Common Sense.

Common Sense lived a long life but died from heart failure early in the new millennium. No one really knows how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes, factories and offices, helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness. For decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, the early bird gets the worm, and life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second (or even last, as long as your best efforts were given).

A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including body piercing, whole language and "new math." But his health declined when he became infected with the "if-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus. In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing regulations. He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies, reports of six year old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student. It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but cannot inform the parent when the female student is pregnant or wants an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports.

Finally, a woman who was stupid enough not to realize that coffee is hot, and was awarded a huge payout for her stupidity, caused Common Sense to finally throw in the towel.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepsiblings: My Rights and lma Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

I thought Common Sense kicked the bucket long before May 2002.. I'm surprised it lived that long.

Welcome to the new millennium

Yes!

Common Sense is dead!
Trust is long gone!
Truth is a matter of opinion!

I do not know what wonders the new millennium will bring, bit it is virtually guaranteed to bring something different than the last.

My advice is to quit pining for what you believe you have lost and join the rest of us on the path to the new frontier. To do otherwise will leave you obsolete, and forgotten in some retirement home some where.

There is a new world out there waiting for you, are you up to the challenge?

Yes, of course. A brave new world. Filled with people that have more excuses than Carter had little pills for whatever behavior they want to undertake. Afterall, it's not their fault.

Nice post Ishmael. *KOF*

Now that is not a very positive altitude is it?

You are still holding back. Think what the future could learn from you. Then again, maybe it shouldn't..

Thx HS.

So many truths in everything that was written, but it was this last bit that really caught my eye.

To often many fall into the It isn't my fault, but theirs, its my right to.., its all my parents fault. They did this or that or I wasn't loved enough as a child... mind set. Passing the buck. Not accepting responsibilities for our own faults and failures in our lives.

I really will miss Common Sense.
Truth, Trust, Reason, Responsibility, as well as the other unnamed mebers of the family, Integrity, and Honesty, will be sadly missed. I wonder just how great the new millenia will be when Ima Whiner and My Rights figure out they killed off their scapegoats.

A billion people, all with their fingers pointed at someone else. Yep. Quite a sight.

Ishmael, wasn't Common Sense Thomas Paine's child? And wasn't she in love with Uncle Bill?;)

I understand Want and Ignorance are enjoying new-found popularity in this tragedy.

Good post!

Good post!

Want and Ignorance are the illegitimate children of My Rights and Ima Whiner.

The seeds you sow.

When I first saw this post I thought, 'Common Sense? Common? The hip hop artist?'

You are obviously much more aware of the backgrounds of those you just named as rape victims and the rape thread(s) than I am.

I became aware of Muff's experience and wrote her to let her know how badly I felt about our arguments and her reaction to my one joke BDSM scene post in light of having learned of her experience.

As I told her at the time, I didn't read the details of her post...I scanned it and got out of the thread right away when I realized what I'd seen.

The others you have named... I wasn't aware of their personal revelations at the times I responded to their attacks against me, and in fact until you said it here I was completely unaware of most of their histories in this regard.

Whereas you have named them as rape victims after the threads have (you say) been taken down.

Your act strikes me as highly improper.

But that sort of thing likely doesn't cross your mind in your blind self-serving attack on me.

Are they Republicans? Do they drive SUV's?

As for this assertion:

"Where Hanns goes, you follow. Always Lance. "

Obviously that is not possible. He is not here, for example....so much for "always".

So, yes, please provide an Excel spreadsheet as a link in your reply with a full concordance of every single one of Hanns' posts and the names of all those posting within three posts above and below in descending order of Lit users near him since he arrived.

Please also reproduce all posts in which Hanns has threatened another poster and I chimed in to agree that the other person should be "macked" or what have you.

But first, I think you should go edit the names out of your attack.

You sick old fuck.
