An AH book club?

As you can tell from all my book threads lately, I'm spending my summer doing alot of reading. And after I read a particularly good book, I always want to talk about it, so I'm wondering if there'd be any interest in starting a book club type thing? We'd all read the same book and then discuss, either here on the board or in pm/email/yahoo group or something. No idea how it'd work or if it would, which is part of why I'm asking. :)

Thoughts? Interest?

I've run and participated in a couple of book clubs at the local bookstore. Would love to do one online. Sure, I'm interested, although I have a few ideas about it to offer, if you are interested.

Offer away. No idea how to do one online or how to run one; I just know I want to be part of one.

Well, because it's online, it could be a lot more loose.

Most people seem to respond better (at least at the start) if the list is provided and they can just read from that. Later they want to suggest books, but usually, to start, you have to have something already there.

We could put up a list of books and let people pick something they want to read from the list and then tell us about it. That way if someone reads more slowly, they don't miss out, and if someone reads faster or has one book they like better (or we hit one they've already read) there are alternatives. Since the conversation can be continuous, we aren't as limited as you would be sitting around a living room. It would be hard to facilitate as easily as a face to face meeting -- the conversation would tend to be a bit slower -- but I don't know that it matters.

Unfortunately, no food, but, oh well! :)

The ony worry I have is losing threads or losing a conversation inside of one thread, and threadjacking would happen (who could resist?) which might make it difficult. But other than that, I think it would work. See who else might be interested and then we can see what happens.

I like the idea; I've participated in on-line book discussions that were great.

The challenge, as you point out, would be selecting the book. We aren't, for example, a mystery writers forum, and so likely to want to discuss just mysteries.

One way it could be done would be to switch between a "best seller" and a classic. So, for example, we could all read The Da Vinci Code just to see what the hoopla is all about and discuss it as writers as well as readers...and then we could switch over to some book we should all, as writers and readers read like, oh, say, Of Mice and Men.

I do think we might want to avoid very long books. I suspect we're all fast readers but anything nearing 500 pages might slow the discussion down considerably.

That's a good idea. Of course, I'm biased cuz that's close to what I'm already doing with my reading this summer. :)

 I despise both authors, so I'll skip those two, thanks :D

That's probably what will happen, tho. People will only read what books interest them. That why I suggested a multiple book list, so there is always something to discuss.

I can see the benefit of that, but only if the list is fairly small. Like two or three at a time. Because if there's a list of ten and everyone chooses a different book then there's really not going to be any discussion; it would end up more like a book review.
Another way to go would be that there could be suggestions and then we'd vote on what we want to read. Or something like that.

That might work online -- it doesn't work worth shit in a start up face-to-face group ;)

Why don't you put up a short list of the next 4 books you want to read and one book you've already read, Sophia, and let those of us who want read one or more of them, and then start a conversation?

Alrighty. Hopefully someone will find at least one of them interesting. :)

Well, as you read them, you might write up your impressions, Think in terms of specific things you liked and didn't like. Don't worry about "spoiling" the book -- assume anyone reading has also read it. And ask questions.

Reading for discussion is different from just reading to read.

AS much as I would love to , and you have such great ideas SJ, my reading time is so small and filled to the brim with techmanuals and security annoucnements I will have to beg off, but I did want to say that this is such a cool idea.

I'd like to join. My reading time is also limited, but I would enjoy listening int even if I haven't been able to read the book being discussed. Would that be all right?

I was hoping you'd be interested! :) I suspect we'll hit on books that people have already read or books that people have been planning to read, etc, so I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to discuss something. That's my hope anyway.

Brilliant idea, SJ. I joined a book discussion group a few years ago, but it fizzled out. Small town, ya know. Coupled with the fact the book chosen by the director was BORING... well, it was no wonder people lost interest.

So, what are you reading at the moment SJ. Where are we going to start? :nana:

Edit: 'Cause sometimes I'm a flaming idiot.

I'm working on Paradise right now. Once I got past not having a clue what was happening, I started to figure it out and now I'm totally fascinated with it and can't wait to see where she's heading.

Great idea. I'll do my best but I've got the same prob as Shang. It's mainly planes and hotels when I get to read. Took me a year to get round to the Da Vinci Code - what a letdown!

Have you tried getting Rumply involved? He's the only one who admits to reading Zadie Smith and P G Wodehouse.

Try Martin Amis, 'Money' is great - but depressing.
