Alternate Future - Hardware Hackers

The Context:

This thread is based on an alternate future where instead of coming up with the wonderful software of today, humans decided to invest in hardware driven computing. However, the only people who can afford these computers are the wealthy and the rich governments of the world.

The year is 2001 and the Cold War has never ended. The United Soviet Socialist Republic (Russia et al) and the United States of America are still stockpiling weapons of mass destruction. Nuclear weapons of epic proportions lay dormant in underground silos, awaiting the push of a button.

The only way to win is to destroy the computer system of the other country. Problems tend to multiply in situations such as these. President Richard Smith and VP Carla Belarc have authorized the Department of Computer Advancement to use all means to keep the USA's silos intact and to seek out and destroy the USSR's computers in hopes of ending the war. Further, all immigration to the USA has been ceased and martial law is in effect.

Major problems faced by both sides are as follows:
1. Thousands of miles and military force between systems.
2. Indetermined number of silos controlled by both sides.
3. Firewalls (literally... you'll see)

Captain Stan Dard
(USA Navy Intelligence):

"Captain on deck!" The young ensign signals my entrance.

I look around the room at my new crew. "Welcome aboard United State Ship Spark. As you were, men." With my command, they return to their duties. The bridge is small, no larger than my college dormatory room. At the front of the bridge, a large window made of triple reinforced glass shows the outside world.

From our window, I could see the room that the small ship is contained in. Against the far wall, the scientists are watching us through a window of their own. The blue floor, ceiling, and walls glow with artificial light. A lone computer is operating on the floor a few feet from the ship.

I sit in the Captain's chair and strap the harness over my shoulders and across my lap. I instruct the crew to prepare for training exercise Alpha. I remove the cap from my head and push my glasses back up my large nose. My bald head glistens with sweat and the other men feel the heat of the reactor powering up.

"Folks, I know this is the first time for many of you. I can assure you that this will be a smooth ride and you will grow as a team.

"Just to make sure, let's have a final check. XO!"

The executive officer looks at me and goes through his mental checklist aloud, "If you are not in a seat, strap yourselves to the back wall via the harnesses. Now, the four people in seats are the Captain, myself, Navigation, and Systems. When I call your stations, reply as if you are ready.
"Systems!"
"Check."
"Navigation!"
"Check."
"Engineering!"
The floor rattles with the engineer's response.
"XO reports that all systems are operational and our course is laid in, sir"

I respond, "Thank you XO. At this time, we will begin our descent." To warn the engineer, I kick the trapdoor by my feet. Suddenly, a surge of power courses through the ship. "Time to meet the atoms. GO!"

The navigator presses buttons on the console and the room outside of the window begins to grow. Soon, we are merely a speck on the blue floored room. The navigator drives the ship to the nearby computer and into it. "Time to go hunting for that bug!" The harnesses unbuckle and the door opens to a world of circuts and chips. At the door, I look up at the nearby transistor that towers over us. "Four teams of two, let's go." I stand with my XO as I watch the squad of new trainees run onto the circuit board, careful of the large electrical devices and strong current carrying wires. They carry their weapons as if they have never used them before. "I sure hope none of them dies today--that always kills the mood."

CPT Dard:

After my training sergeant speaks his mind, I give him a hard look. "Now Alex, I know that mission in Russia back in the day left some lunacy in your head, but don't go crazy on my shift. You know as well as I do that these kids have to finish basic training--and, part of that is running this course."

I lift the cap from my head to remove more perspiration. Figuring that my sergeant understands and is ready to proceed, I ask him for an update, "Sarge, what's the status on our teams? Anyone found the bug, yet? I heard she's a big one!" Damn moths, I think to myself, Lucky for us, she got a hold of one of the older systems.

"sir, two of the teams have picked up its trail but the bug has not been found yet .i believe it shouldnt take much longer, sir" i said as i remembered the fact that this was basic training,'my memoryis not as it used to be' i thought." sir, if i may ask where are we off to after this, sir" i asked letting my curiosity get the better of me.

CPT Dard:

"Well," I confide in my sergeant, "the Pentagon assigned me to recruit some men for the anti-Russia raid." A brief smile escapes my stone expression.

"Since I choose who's going, you should know that you're my top candidate for second in charge." A cackle over the radio stops me mid-though. "If that's okay with you," I ask the sergeant.
