Today, I registered for the chat part of this site after several weeks of reading the stories. I went into the Lounge and was asked my age.( I thought it was just someone coming on to me) I laughed & joked and answered"old as dirt" and then said 44. I was then told by this person that only a child would have a number behind their user name and I was not telling the truth. I have the 16 there because of the day I was born. I was booted and when I triied to re-enter, a little box came up and said I was banned from ever chatting on this site again. I realize that you have to be careful about minors coming into the chat rooms, but there has to be a better way to monitor this. Anyone have any suggestions for me? All I wanna do is CHAT!

Or just dont go chat and stay on the boards.

I did re-register..it says I can't..it has my ISP number and won't let me in ..dammit..lol

If the person asking for your age had their name in blue, that was a chat monitor asking the question. There have been numerous problems in chat with minors coming into the boards, and if the chat monitors suspect some one of being a minor, they ask how old the person is, and if they do not get a serious response right away, they do reserve the right to boot. However, typically, allowances are made for "newbies" and I do believe that they ask via PM rather than in the room itself. (It's unclear from your post if the person asking was PM'ing you or if they asked within the room.

Either way, you can contact the chat monitor and explain the situation. (Their contact information is located on the log in page of chat. If the person asking had a blue colored name, let them know it was your first time in chat and you simply were not aware that chat monitor's names are in blue. (There is a periodic message that pops up while in chat about this, but if you weren't on long enough to read this you wouldn't have known) And the argument that "only" children put numbers at the end of their names is foolish. There are adults that do this as well.

I would suggest speaking to the chat monitor and see if they can re-instate you.

Instead of doing the chat on this site you can go to talkers and chat the old way. The one I use most is talker.com 3200. The way to access this site is either using a MUD program or simply telnet. When using telnet from windows you can click on Start, then click on Run. In the box type 'command' if you use win98, or 'cmd' of you use a newer version of windows. In the dos box that pops up type 'telnet talker.com 3200'. Create an id and enter the world.

The situation that you came across is typical of any chat situation.

I am an Op in several different Internet Relay Chat rooms.

One of which is an adult only room .. and we keep minors out ..... the best way to do this is by directly asking the person their age. If we don't get a straight answer or any answer at all, our next option is to kick ... I usually give a person two chances to answer me before booting.

The above posters who said to talk to the Op/Moderator and explain the situation is the best thing you can do.

Also, the person should have done *their* homework as well .... but I only speak for myself in this instance.

I just went to the page and checked and there is no person to contact listed there anymore. (Shows how long it's been since I've read that page!)

I would send a PM to Laurel and let her know that you need to speak to one of the chat monitors regarding letting you back in. Laurel really doesn't have all that much to do with chat, but she should be able to tell you who to contact to get back on.

I'll also try logging in tonight and seeing if I can get that information from one of the mods if they are online. Unfortunately, that won't be until later tonight, so this is about all I can offer you at the moment.

Wiggles, you are right..they do suck, esp. since I wrote a letter to the comment & help section the day I posted this thread...and haven't heard a thing back from them. You would think that SOMEONE could write a simple answer to my email. Anyway I'm taking lovetoread's suggestion and just hang out with all of you here on the boards. Thanks for making me welcome!
