Ok I don't know if this particular issue has been discussed and if so please forgive me. I know getting thru security with toys has been but I don't recall seeing this concern before.

Here's the thing, I am flying home in November. A friend of mine mentioned to me that my nipple rings will set off the machine you walk thru. If I were traveling alone I would be too concerned about this, however, I am traveling with my two boys who have no idea that mom has her nipples pierced.

Ok now the question, should I tell the security personnel prior to my walking thru about my rings (quietly of course, out of the boys ear shot)? Or should I just hope that I don't have to face this issue? (I know I know, silly second question..lol)

I would like to hear from those of you out there that have experience with this please. And any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you Brekke! I read most of the first page.

If I were going to a larger airport I might not be so worried about it, but the one I'm going to is a dinky one. LOL

i have gone thru security things before and my rings never set them off. if you are concerned get a pair of the plastic rings or bars and put them in for the trip

this place has the plastic 1's (UV FLEXIBLE Barbells) for $1.99 http://www.bodycandy.tv/

they're what i use for x-rays and such

i work at the airport. i go through security 3-4 times a day, and have never once set off the alarm because of my piercings. generally, piercing jewelry doesn't set it off. don't worry about telling the guards.

Having been a frequent traveler in the past, I would say you may or may not set the alarm on the metal detector off. The reason I say that is because some airports have the sensitivity of the machine set at different levels. I've been to some airports that had such sensitive sensors that the small peices of metal in my shoes where the laces go thru set it off. But other airports nothing happens.

With the increased security, many airports are increasing the sensitivity on their metal detectors.

I wouldn't bother with telling the guard you have nipple rings. Either they will set the alarm off and you will just have to be taken aside for a more intensive search. At that point, the hand wand will either go off when they pass it over your breasts or it won't. I would think you could just tell that guard that you have nipple rings since you will be away from everyone else (they won't let your sons stand right next to you during that search normally). Now, whether they make you actually show the rings I'm not exactly sure, but I would think they'd just take your word for it. Worst case, a female guard takes you into a separate room and requires you to show her the rings then she lets you go on your way.

I kind of like the idea presented in a previous post. Just replace them temporarily with a plastic ring.

Just my two cents.

I flew from Orlando to LaGuardia for the BDSM get-together last month. I have 12g curved barbells in my nipples. No problems at security whatsoever.

I have had them for over 2 years. I have never set off a detector with them. I have been randomly wanded (post 9/11 extra security random screen), and there were no eyebrows raised. Have flown into airports large and small, all OVER the US--most of my flying done after 9/11. Anchorage, Albuquerque, Atlanta, Charlotte, Augusta (GA), Minneapolis, Norfolk, Orlando...

I wouldn't sweat it if I were you--Have a great time :)

Thank you everyone! I do feel a lot better about it now. Just something my kids don't need to know about mom...LOL

I like the advice about changing the rings, however one is only about a month and a half old. Plus I've never changed the other side so I honestly don't even know how. I suppose that's something I will learn about eventually though as I'd like to eventually get some gold rings.

Thanks again!

This was my double-take of the day: I read dixi's sentence as saying that her son was only a month-and-a-half old. At that point, I was thinking to myself, "And how on earth do you hope to keep even the plastic nipple rings a secret from the nursing baby?"

Well, if you removed the chain connecting the two rings, you wouldn't have to worry about setting off the scanners.

Well damn why didn't I think of that? Good advice! ;)

LMAO

For what it's worth, I have both nipples pierced w/8 guage rings and neither time did I have a problem with airport security. If you're nervous about changing the rings, your piercer will probaly be willing to make the change for you. My first set of rings was almost impossible to open and he was a great help.

post 9/11 they always scanned you with the wand and it always picked up my belly button barbel. so go for plastic i guess. however, if you've had the piercings for a while, you can just take the rings out for the duration of travel.

I have been thru international and domestic metal detectors, on numerous occasions, with my collection of rings and bars and have never set off one.But if you are worried, just take them out for the flight. If it is a captive bead and you dont have circlip plyers, just go to a piercing shop and get them to take it out for you and pop new plastic retainers in for you then and there.

Fuuny, I'd think some of you would (assuming you left early enough to still make your flight) WELCOME a strip-search & cavity inspection :p
