As of three hours ago (4am gmt) Monarch Airlines went into official receivership stranding up to 100,000 holidaymakers worldwide. The CAA have chartered 30 planes to fly stranded passengers home.

In Europe the competition between cheap short haul airlines is fierce.

RyanAir has cancelled thousands of flights because of lack of pilot hours; Monarch has failed; more airlines are vulnerable because their finances are weak.

At present cheap flights equals risk of cancellation but even the major carriers can have problems. Most European capitals are accessible by superfast rail services and allowing for airport delays before and during check in, and transfers both ends - rail can be quicker or as fast or slightly longer. But rail is far more comfortable than cattle-class aircraft.
