Most of the nuclear power plants in the United States were constructed during the 1960's and 1970's. They are breaking down and starting to have serious problems because of their age.

These plants were originally designed to run for only 20-30 years or so. But we've been running them for twice that long. They are simply upgraded and have essential equipment replaced to keep them running.

Given the archaic and broken-down state of US nuclear power plants, it's been predicted that a Fukashima-like scenario will occur in the US within the next 20-30 years. What needs to be done is the NRC (nuclear regulatory commission) should retire the current power plants and build new ones.

First NEW nuclear power plant goes into operation.
