Aggravation #1-Express checkout lines

Doing more Christmas shopping today it became quite evident that a fair many people don't pay attention to the "8 items or less" checkout lines. But what is more aggravating is that the cashier is not allowed to say anything to the customer. I found this out because I asked the cahier when it was my turn to check out. She said they are told "people complain to management when they are reminded it is an express line". What do you think?

Having worked as a cashier at Fred Meyer in Fairbanks (like a superwalmart with a lumberyard and way expensive jewelry store) that customers are rude people, particularly when they know that no one is going to do anything about it.

Complain to management, listen to apologies and mouthed platitudes, and watch the manager toodle off to do whatever s/he'd been doing prior. Bitch long enough you may get a gift certificate out of the deal, but I doubt it.

Not all managers are complacent. I've been in retail management for six years and my policy has always been the same, I do abuse my employees and neither will anyone else. Obnoxious behavior gets you banned from my store.

I believe the customer is always right, but there is a point when you cease to be my customer.

Back on topic, when I was with WalMart, I did move people out of the express lanes that had too many items.

Say something yourself, some times it will embarrass them. Or loudly comment on how many people cannot count to 8.

You poor baby...c'mere *rubbing a sexy pair of very tense shoulders*

Try some deep breathing exercises....I do calf raises while waiting in line to distract me from the people around me. And it often helps to concentrate on the little joys rather than on the little frustrations. There will be frustrations of all varieties during this retail season....prepare for them...perhaps a shot of scotch before leaving? ;)

Feel free, tony dear, to come buy for a massage whenever you feel the need.

How fast can I run to Kansas? Maybe if I tap my shoes three times. ;)

i am a cashier at Target, myself.. whenever it's not really busy (so i can pay attention to the people moving into my lane) i always make it a point to grab the offending "guest's" attention and point at the fucking "6 Items or Less" sign and frown really nicely.. most people don't care, actually... the only ones that get pissed most often would be bitter old women.. sorry, but it's true.. for guys, ya just say "he/she can help you right away on the other lanes" and off they go, always looking to get the hell outta there.. that's been my experience, anyway...

but, as a cashier, nothing pisses me off more than a "guest" coming to my lane when i'm at one of the expresses with a cart full of little shit just before i am supposed to leave or go on a break... one time someone did that, they paid with certificates from the local mall (which is just acrossed the street) and since our machines are not set up to run them through, even though we've always accepted them, i had to put all $400 worth of $5 and $10 certificates through as checks, meaning i had to type in the person's driver's lisence # in for ever damn one of 'em.. took twenty damn minutes to put 'em all through...
GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Nodding my head

I will have to agree with NSW. I do think everyone gets on edge during Christmas.. for what reasons I don't really know..

I also work in retail & I have escorted people out of my store when they have gotten abusive. I will not tolerate anyone abusing our employees. The funniest was 3 Arab guys who were pulling a credit card scam. They thought that by yelling at me in Arabic, they could intimidate me, probably because I am only 5'2" tall. I got up in one of their faces & told them they could no way out talk or out yell me & that I would have them arrested for fraud. They left, probably calling me a Yankee she devil bitch, but I don't take that crap from anyone. Made my whole day better when they left without the merchandise & without the CC.

At Stop & Shop it's 12 items or less but I've yet to meet a customer who even glances at the sign before plowing their 'trolley' into the line.

Often a gentle, "Excuse me, how many items do you have?" reminds the customer that I can count..
While effort to remind customer's of common courtesy (They're Bostonians and years of driving through and near Boston have made them oblivious to its existence) is appreciated by the customer with four items behind them - though it's often thwarted by a CS manager who waves people into the express line whenever they complain about how long they've been waiting.

"Yes, I understand that she had 24 items and you only have 19 but.. ummm.. ahhh. Okay, just hurry."

tereasafannin, i salute you!

we got some pansy guy as the head manager at our store...
grrr.... the WUSE!!!

My heroine,,,:p if you promise to abuse me I'll sit at your feet doing your every beck and call,,,LOL

Me thinks you had a case of stutter fingers sweetie,,,:)

STILL,,, there are worse things than being abused by KE

Oh for Christ's sake,, that's what I get for typing while mad.

To be totally honest, I loathe Christmas. Six years of dealing with half the idiots on the planet has kind of ruined it for me.

Alright CW, assume the position. ;)

That's EXACTLY why I left retail,,, The same assholes day after day,,, the same shitty attitudes day after day,,, I was an overnight manager for Wal-Mart for 3 years,,, all of the creeps come out of the wood work at night,,, thanks, but no thanks,,,

Poor Kitty. After 20 years in retail I have hated Christmas too, except for this year. As most of you know, I have a badly broken wrist, with some complications. I have been home since the end of September. I like this Christmas!!!!!
Though I kinda miss my regular customers, one even sent me a card! Sniff.....
We don't have express lanes where I manage,a craft store, but get people that budge ahead in line because they only have a couple things. Ha. Not when I am on the register.

I was the overnight assistant for them too. That's how I met my husband, he was my receiving manager.

See, you really can get everything at WalMart. :D
