Hi folks, I couldn't find anything about this in search so I apologize if it's an already discussed topic

I have a series that is going to contain group sex [mfm so far]

The first two parts there have been minimal male to male contact (legs brushing and incidental contact) but I have been signaling a bit more to come

It's not going to go full male male (there will always be female's involved) but I do want to add oral male to male contact

Does anyone have experience of this turning off your existing audience and killing viewership ? (or the opposite)

I recall reading a very good group sex series a year or so ago and after 10-12 parts, when I was invested in it, the author added incest in most of the remaining chapters.

I don't care if others read/write about incest but it holds no interest for me and I ended up canning the series and stopped reading, which I don't want to happen with my own series

Any experiences would be appreciated

-Nick

If people haven't been put off so far, they'll probably cope. Mostly.

I write polyamory stories. I've noticed a drop in ratings where I've expressed loving MM contact in the context of their F lovers. My attitude is "that's the way it is in the real world, folks". Physical expressions of mutual love in a poly situation don't stop at the MF boundary.

I would add a note to the beginning of the story and remind readers to check the tags and then tag appropriately. MM contact in a group scene isn't enough for me to stop reading, but I will skip a few paragraphs.

This is a good idea. It would be a minimal aspect but I will definitely do that. Thank you

The no-homo crowd is real. I'm not sure how big it is but it's out there and it's significant.

Remember that regardless of gender or orientation, the majority of readers are putting themselves into the shoes of your main character to live the fantasy (whether you intend them to or not), and if gay is a squick for them, you will lose them with this.

Some dudes are totally fine pretending to be the dude in your story when another naked dude enters the room. Others will nope out right there, and real super fast too.

Some dudes that are otherwise fine with another naked dude will still nope out the moment that a penis touches another dude. Yet, others are still fine with it.

But each of these groups of dudes is significant. They're not just one or two dudes here or there.

I would say that if your series already has mfm scenes that do not escalate to any actual gay male sex and that you are happy with the reactions so far, then so long as the lack of gay escalation continues, you should be fine. But if anything regarded as actually gay happens, you will notice a change.

You're never going to make everyone happy. Some people will love your story. Others will hate it with a passion no matter what you write. I'm of the camp that believes you should write the story for yourself, and let the chips fall where they may. Tell the story as it demands to be told. Don't be afraid to cross categories. I also believe that giving your readers a heads up about what to expect is a good idea; tags, intro, etc.

Thank you. Disappointing but I get it. Good food for thought

Be prepared for the score for that chapter to be lower than the chapters before and after, but the View count to be higher. That's what happened in a couple of my stories where MM is introduced.

That speaks for itself, really. The real men of Lit will declare they don't like it, but they'll read it twice to make sure ;).

Thanks to you (and all the others) for advice. I am going to go for it. I'm only 3 chapters in so what's the worst that can happen?

I don't doubt that, and I think there's obvious value in being accurate.

Remember, though, that lots of our readers are reading one-handed, as it were. Realism is not always what they want. If they encounter unexpected squick while they're in the middle of a potential orgasm, and that jars them enough that they can't "finish," it's understandable that they'll feel a little forlorn when it comes time for them to vote and comment.

Some readers, are more invested in realism and literary excellence, and will appreciate the accuracy. Other readers are invested in, umm, other things. We'll never really know the proportions involved; all we can do is write the story we feel compelled to write.

Great to see this - as that is exactly what I’m writing at the moment with the final part of my first series.

My Female Boss Takes Control

I feel that mm is where this story ends up, and I’ve sign-posted it several times. Interesting to see what the reaction is.

I have a question - if you’re take a story from mf to mm, and the f is there in the scene, would you tag it bi, gay or both?

Looking forward to it

I put some brief male to male oral in ‘Testing Boundaries pt 2’
The series is in E&V and it hasn’t attracted any adverse comment or down rating
Trust your writing to make it relevant and appropriate and trust your readers to understand the context

Thanks I did add it, hard to say if it hurt or not as the series overall has less votes and viewers as the chapters go on

Thanks for your help !

We have long noticed that some readers will always find something to be unhappy about. Plus a series can be tricky because you as the writer will often want to change direction in the middle. Or you'll want to add more than you planned. Or maybe you can't finish it! We're all learning by doing, and we may not have developed the discipline to write ten chapters first and then start publishing them. After six years I'm still making organizational errors like that.

I should add that you'll drive yourself crazy if you worry too much about votes and views. It's difficult to predict how a series will be received as it goes along.
