I am playing with two stories based on similar ideas to this. This is the synopsis of the one that’s a 750 word story.
A cold winter’s evening in December finds a holiday party held at a local university. All members of faculty and staff are invited to a warm and lively party with students. The narrator and Ellen, a couple with deep roots in the department and a loving partnership too, decide to attend a party dressed in similar sweaters to take a break from their daily normalcy. The atmosphere becomes charged with excitement upon their meeting with Mark, a senior lecturer with a flair for linguistics, and Lila, his attractive wife.
As the night progresses into music and dance, Lila comes up to the narrator with a provocative proposition: she, Mark, wants to "pamper" Ellen. She leaves a phone number beside Ellen's drink, which serves as an invitation. Though surprised, the narrator experiences a rush of excitement as Ellen sends a clear, silent transmission of understanding.
Later, in their apartment, the couple freely discusses their experience in pillow talk. Ellen is glad she has been flattered and interested in the encounter, while the narrator feels aroused about other people being attracted to Ellen in their discussion of trust and boundaries.
Days later, they think about the possibility, and anticipation builds. The napkin with the number is left on Ellen's bedside table, symbolizing that the door is now ajar. Later, when they choose to make contact, it is with full understanding and consideration.
The experience solidifies the strength of their relationship, which has been constructed on trust, effective communication, and a willingness to examine desire together. The twinkling vacation lights, now a symbol for something greater, represent illumination found in their relationship, a positive addition rather than a path departure.
