I think an open marriage can work. The only prerequisite is that sex isn't a cornerstone of the marriage (any more). Their marriage is build on other things, like trust and respect for each other. There are lots of different possible dynamics, her scheme to help him, her fear of her plan backfiring on her (whether he finds out and feels like it's a sympathy thing or she's too successful and it makes her jealous), her learning how different it is to help someone facing rejection, her recognizing that it's a Hell of a lot easier for a woman than it is a man (or not), or her just showing that she wants to make it good experience for him. Something that brings them back to some kind of equal footing that both of them want.
