A question about spitting

Ok, so I just yawned and a fountain like spray of spittle arched clear across my desk. I know this is not entirely uncommon, but does anyone know what the hell causes it? Preasure on some spit glad or something?

Just my gross little inquisitory for the morning.

Shut up! I've been trying to figure that out since I was a kid! Must be like curling your tongue, some can, some can't.

Don't hate me. It just started to happen about 10 years ago when I was recovering from bronchitis.

there's actually a name for that. it's something like glicking. i'll find out this afternoon and get back with you. if you curl your tongue back toward your throat and look in a mirror you'll see two little "bumps" under your tongue and that's where the saliva comes from. try sticking your tongue out without uncurling it and you should be able to squirt on demand.

lessons on ear wiggling, eyebrow lifting and belching on command to follow.

What is really fun is doing it by accident in front of a class full of teen agers, and hitting one of them.

It goes one of two ways. Either they ignore it, knowing it was an accident, we might make eye contact and sort of share a moment. Or they freak out and make a big sceen. He spit on me! Eeeeww gross! So forth and so on.

Another great teaching moment.

The technical term for that is gleek. (yeah huh!)

Usually, it's just saliva shooting out of one of the sublingual ducts under your tongue. I don't know what causes it, but it sure is fun!

I think it is the squeezing of the muscles around the salivary glands that causes the stream of saliva to shoot out.
