a musical question

i bring the topic of music up for two reasons. one, because i just bought A Perfect Circle's Mer de Noms and it's absolutely incredible... and two, because it made me wonder how diverse the tastes here are.

actually, there are two more reasons... my tagline is a song lyric, and i wonder if anyone recognizes it (i doubt it, cos the band was never big, even within Canada), and because my own musical tastes are both diverse and narrow at the same time.

okay, okay, so i'm a weirdo. :) i'm just curious to hear what people listen to, and play, if they play instruments (i do piano, electric guitar, and trombone).

not sure about your tagline....

there was a thread a while back I think called "everyone's favorite bands" or something where we answered all this before.... and I am quite sure I answered it then but since you weren't here yet....some of mine:

foreigner, boston, chicago, U2, poison, soundgarden, niel young, aerosm, air sup, restless heart, rob zombie, primus (early), shania, temptations, supremes, ricky nelson, simon & garf, wils phil, def leop, vivaldi (esp. four seasons), mozart, beethoven, bach, chauser, jim brickman, q.latifa, dion ferris, mot crue, beatles, journey, toto, p.cetera, the jets, moody blues, mclaughlin, beatles, etc...

Basically I love music of all varieties.

I sing, play the piano, and in the past have played a little bit of many things including: bongos, guitar (classical/acoustic), tenor sax, contra-alto clarinet, bells, xylophone, french horn (I was in the hs band pit okay? gimme a break!) haha

Anyway, the music I like to perform the most is usually somewhere between the ballad and regular rock and occasionally a folk-like sound to it.

Damnit Jade beat me to it ;)

Anyway, my music taste is varies a lot. Basically everything well made.
But I do prefer rock.
Okay to mentioin a few that I listen to.

Faith no more, Bon Jovi, Dido, Metallica, U2, Kashmir, Alanis Morrisette, Chemical Brothers.....
And the list goes on.

I play four instruments. Guitar, Drums, Bass, Piano.
Singing I leave to the pro's like Jade. :)

I do compose also. And has been doing so since I was like 12 or something.

Even made a little tribute to Laurel & the Gang. (hmmmmm, how's that for a band name LOL)
It can be found here somewhere if you'd like to hear what I make. (Okay I know I'm gonna get flamed for being a braghead LOL)

Um, that's about it.

oh justin dear .. does that mean the band is Canadian?? hmmm .. i always give credit to the musician when i quote a song .. and i usually quote songs in my tag lines lol ..

so you are cheating now ... you are being so naughty i might have to spank you .. hmmm

tell me which canadian band .. obscure huh? well it's not the bare nakeds right .. although it sounds like it could be their lyrics .. not the hip and not blue rodeo .. hmm who is obscure .. ok what year then .. is it recent?

My preferences in music are, CCSN&Y,(or any combination of them), the Fab Four, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, America, Santana,(are you figuring out I'm old), and of course the Irish Tenors.

I play guitar and keyboards. Currently I have no time for a band. (I spend to much time on this computer)

justin? Who are the Mer de Noms?

oh or do you mean the band's name is A Perfect Circle? are they quebecois, cheri?

i love all (well most i guess) rock, alternate, blues, and yea ok jade a bit of folk thrown in too luv ..

and i make a great groupie :)

I love A Perfect Circle - I've got several MP3's of theirs that I listen to constantly and will probably buy the CD so I can take it in my car. I'm a Tool fan from years back (circa the Opiate EP), and am amazed at how complex their music has grown. Tool's last album was amazing. A Perfect Circle is good too - more melodic, less discordant than Tool but still powerful and edgy.

I like east coast hardcore like Quicksand, Error Type 11, etc. I also like silly, fun stuff like Rancid and Less Than Jake (so sue me). In addition, I like punk/college rock stuff like the Get Up Kids, Jawbreaker, and Sunny Day Real Estate. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of electronica and some hip hop...It's cool to listen to when you're editing erotic stories, especially the ambient and drum & bass stuff with no vocals. I really like Q-Tip & the Fugees type of hip hop, and drum & bass stuff like LTJ Bukem. I'm a huge fan of Tricky - saw him twice up in LA, and man, what great shows. Martina's voice...wow, it just blows you away. It's even sweeter and more powerful in person. There's more, but that's all I'll bore you with for now.

As far as instruments go, I tried to learn the guitar a few years ago. I learned to play chords, and I could play the riff from Rocket From the Crypts "Hanging on a Rope" and The Kink's "You Really Got Me" but that's as far as I got. I'm no musician! I took two semesters of Music with Computers in college and we made digital music using synthesizers and Cakewalk software. That was fun, but I'm better at listening to music than making it, that's for sure, lol.

good vibrations

wow laurel .. i'm impressed .. amazing ..

what vibes you put out too girl .. i just posted at 6:14 .. one minute after your post on the hypothetical question?? thread .. also quoting the Kinks ....

cyber vibes .. you got em big time dear :)

A Perfect Circle are American, Isabella - Mer de Noms is their first album. non, ils ne sont pas québecoises... :)

Laurel - my best friend has been trying to turn me on to Tool for years. he bought me AEnima as a going-away present when i left for university. i like it, but sometimes i wonder how many of the layers of meaning have been put there just to see how many fans will decode them... good stuff, though, i think.

Radiohead are my favourite, though. :D

Isabella - no, all of those bands have a profile orders of magnitude higher... but don't spank me, Siren whipped me yesterday to get information out of me and i'm still sore... :)

quite a variety here. apologies for posting a subject that'd already been done (typical newbie mistake - unfortunately, this is not the first time i make it...)

You're so fucking special

why justin dear .. you put my french to shame ...

hey mr. tamborine man .. play a song for me .. i'm not sleepy and there ain't no place i'm going to ..

i wouldn't spank ya luv .. i'm the one who usually gets spanked. :)

naturellement; rappèlez-vous que je suis canadien... :) oh... wait... so are you... erm... my aunt lives in Paris. she's not French, but she lives in Paris. that helps.

ah, Creep... such superb use of three chords... good tune.

ah, a spankee rather than a spanker... i see... ;)

i'm not a spankee. but they said "Siren, whip the answer out of him!" and she said "Okay."

...ow...

yea well bout Siren .. she has good pick up lines that's for sure! I hope your ass isn't too sore luv.

Pantera, Meatloaf, Ozzy Osbourne, Old Metallica, Pink Floyd, Testament, Obituary, Judas Priest, Aerosmith, U2, AC/DC, Led Zep, Guns and Roses, Def Leppard, Queen, Faith No More, Alice Cooper,ZZ Top ... Just to name a few.

I love music that has umph to it.

Just one question there mate.... if you reckon Tool put in that many layers how bout Radiohead?

Oh and yes I love both of them

Okay, I have no idea what the f#$% he just said, but admittedly, I LOVE it when a man talks like that!
(((sigh)))

oh yes Jade .. the french have a lovely way of speaking in tongues lol .. ;)

oh - je ne suis pas français... mon père vient de la Nouvelle-Zélande, et ma mère est Palestinienne - mais je suis Canadien en tout cas. peut-être je vais prendre une photo et lui mettre avec mon info personelle.

 i'm glad you approve...

i don't know about the Québec version of French, though. i'm a Parisian French speaker through and through. :)

chef- i dunno. both do it, you're right. there are definite similiarities in that respect between the two bands. however, i don't think Radiohead do it in the same way that Tool do. you certainly don't have to dig nearly as deep or have any obscure knowledge to get exactly what Radiohead are saying. Tool make you work. i'm not sure how i feel about that :D

I also am quite diverse in my musical tastes, but the last CD I brought was Parachutes by Coldplay. I don't expect they are that well known outside the UK, but check them out cos they're brilliant.

Fuck, this thread is making me feel old.

btw-Siren, that Fuck was for you :)

My three most recent music purchases are, ahem...the latest releases from Steely Dan, Sting, and Don Henley. I feel like a member of the old geezers club, but damn, these guys can still bring it!

I also find that as I'm getting older, I like female vocalists more than the men. Women like Sarah Mclachlan, Paula Cole, Tori Amos, Suzanne Vega, Joan Osborne and several more that I can't think of right now. I know, Early Onset Alzheimers.

But I don't know what it means. Am I wising up in my musical tastes or maybe just getting a little too much in touch with my feminine side?

Gaucho I see nothing wrong with that? And did you read my tastes in music? I listed several from before "my time."

Justin, ya know honey, it would help if you told me what it was you said... hopefully something nice? BTW: did I tell you I am a whole whopping 1/4 french canadian?? yep yep yep!

je ne suis pas français... mon père vient de la Nouvelle-Zélande, et ma mère est Palestinienne - mais je suis Canadien en tout cas. peut-être je vais prendre
une photo et lui mettre avec mon info personelle.

that's just "i'm not french... my dad's from new zealand and my mom's palestinian - but i'm canadian in any case. maybe i'll take a picture and stick it in with my personal info."

almost word-for word... :) shows how much i'm slipping...

1/4? which quarter?

when you're dividing someone in quarters, how do you do it?

okay, okay... calculus.. stop... you're hurting me... :(

The lyric is from the song 'Believe Me' by the band called 'Moist'if anyone out there still cares.

I like a very wide variety of groups. I definitely couldn't list them all:

Dave Matthews Band, Deftones, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt, Nirvana, Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers, Creed, The Doors, Staind, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam (Ten & Vs. anyway), Alanis Morrisette, Beastie Boys, and Nine Inch Nails, just to name a few!

On a side note, has anyone heard the band Kittie? If you haven't, and you like heavy metal, you should check them out. They are an all girl band from Canada touring with the Ozzfest. I heard of them and thought, "Oh, someone like Hole." Boy was I wrong-- these chicks are wild. Some of the screaming in their songs would scare Phil Anselmo himself. :) The music itself isn't that great, but its quite interesting.

I sent in my picture the other week!
You sound like a very interesting mulatto to me!
Those are always the most fascinating people!
So do you share religious beliefs with your mother or father or are they both the same religion? I only ask b/c I once had a buddy from palestine and she was very passionate about her beliefs.
