A mammogram question for women of the board

I don't normally bruise when the mammogram is done, but i did when there was a specific lump they were targeting and used small lead markers of my skin to help pinpoint the location.

The mammogram does increase the likelihood of severe breast pain for me, though. My doctor always says that it won't be painful, i'd love for him to experience the feeling first.

this aardvark has had her mammory glands flattened twice..and never...ever...bruised...not even sore afterward...

have ya ever seen a flat aardvark tit? way sexy...

I don't remember any bruising but they were definately sore for a few days. Not a pleasant experience.

It was a "cone" mammogram that needed more compression, I guess. But they didn't warn me I'd bruise so badly so I was curious if this is normal. I didn't see anything online in the sites I visited about mammograms that said bruising was a side effect.

no swelling or pain for me, although I did have a bit of discomfort for a few hours later, but it was more like having a man with big hands squeeze your boobs continuously. :)

Halo :rose:

Never bruised, but I had an allergic reaction to the tape the used for the little bb markers. Itched like crazy for days.

I have never bruised, either. To ease your mind, why don't you call and ask about it? I know in Seattle, the hospitals usually have a nurse on duty answering these kinds of questions. (Usually the mammogram places are closed on the weekends.)

I'm feeling like it is nothing, but I think you would feel better if you knew that for sure.....

No bruising here .....

which surprised me since they tried to squash them flatter than a pancake.
Then they scared the heck out of me when they said they found something and the doctor wanted to talk to me. First thing he asked me is do you have a mole or something under your left breast. Well, I flashed him lefty "You mean this beautymark?" I think he was as relieved as me.
At least, I think that's why he smiled.;)

Give the Doc a call. Ease your mind.

i haven't had to have one yet.. but i went with a friend who needed one... i made the mistake of letting her hold my hand and telling her to squeeze when it hurt... but she did bruise, quite a bit. but she was very proneto bruise easily and her doctor said it was nothing to worry about.

I've had friends who've bruised. Haven't had a mammogram yet myself.

*sighs* First the umbrella up the wazoo and now flat-tit syndrome. The only thing guys get is a finger up the ass and a ball fondling. This isn't fair.

Sheeeeeeesh why do i keep opening this thread.......One more year and i too will have my first mammogram.........Reading this thread is freaking me out.......ackkkkkkkkkk lol

Mind you...I thought you didn't have to start getting them til you were over 40? I know that some of these women who posted are wayyyyy under 40.

Nope...they say women at 30 need to have them done now. For early detection...also younger than that if you have a family history of breast lumps/cancer or whatever.

I've never had one done, but I know ppl that have and some bruise and some don't. I think it just depends on if the person bruises easily or not. I would call though just to make sure.

Hope everything is fine with you Cheyenne!!! :rose:

Brat

I had my first one done when I was 20. My grandmother had breastcancer and had to have one of her breasts amputated so I'm extra cautious. I have to go to the radiologist once a year anyway to check my thyroid gland so the radioligist just whisked me in to the mamma room and before I knew what happend I had my breasts flattened with what felt like a rolling pin.

Better safe than sorry.

Halo :rose:

Damn those double posts.

Excellent suggestion. I had never used the 24 hour access line to a nurse from my health insurance coverage until about 5 minutes ago.

The nurse I spoke to had access to all kinds of resources and she found the same thing I did when I searched the internet- nothing mentions bad bruising as a mammogram risk factor. But logically, she said it made sense that compressing so much could cause bruises. She said not to worry, but also suggested I call the clinic on Monday to let them know (just in case they want to do a blood test to check me out.) I think I'll call if only to get in my records how I bruised this time so that next time, they don't compress quite as much!

LMAO- I had to think about the umbrella up the wazoo description for a second. Pelvic exams don't bother me at all. My doctor is gentle and never ever hurts me.

I go every year for the screening mammograms and they don't bother me, either. A little bit of pressure, but nothing so terrible that I'd say they hurt.

The diagnostic mammograms actually HURT, like slamming your finger in a door. I guess I would have been more surprised if I hadn't bruised after that.

While I was researching the different tests, I found this site. It is the best one I've seen- very comprehensive and easy to navigate. Anyone thinking about getting a mammogram should check it out so you know what to expect.

I'm glad you called and am quite sure that you will hear the same thing on Monday. You are smart to get it into your records, except good luck on trying to get them to ease up next time.

I think these people were tortured in a former life and are getting back at women in this one. Take care over the weekend and don't fret......you will be fine, dear one.........
