For some it’s just another day off. There are those who do value the sacrifice and service to/for this country that was decidedly made. It hurts to know of all the lives lost trying to defend a way of life.
My 4 brothers, mom, sister-in-laws, 2 of my nephews and one of my nieces all visited the gravesite of my dad yesterday. 2 of those brothers are veterans also. It’s hard getting that many of us together because life responsibilities change as we all get older. I’m just glad we were able to enjoy moments and memories.
There is nothing wrong with it. You cannot change the fact that someone went to war and died. But you can celebrate their life by enjoying this chance to be together and enjoy the things they did. A good burger, cold drinks, the laughter of children. Because they would be right there with you if they could be. Life should be celebrated and the memory of those lost.
I’m a military brat, I married a soldier, I work with DoD, my uncles were in Vietnam and we lost one many years later to suicide. I support our soldiers. But… war…There are no winners, only survivors.
My local farmstand gives space to veterans to collect donations this weekend and Veteran's Day Weekend (even though it's not a Monday Holiday). I have told them more than once that sacrifice of those who came home (and have to live with the memories) is also great.
I will remind people that Memorial Day is in remembrance of the Civil War that is only second to WWII in total casualties and first by a long way in percentage of men under arms killed. While today all who sacrificed are honored, we should remember those who gave their lives to preserve the Union and end slavery.
I don't remember which one, but one of those movies or TV shows set in the 60s. Scene is a typical idyllic Summer day. People out mowing their yard, kids playing ball or other games, riding bikes, generally having a good time.
Staff car turns onto the street and pulls up in front of one house. Two Dress Uniforms get out and start walking up to the door. Everybody stops and turns towards the house. Total calm comes over the block. Then one girl starts screaming ......
