80-year-old Homeowner Arrested After Shooting Burglar

An 80-year-old Army veteran was arrested after he shot a burglar who had broken into his Chicago-area home.

Police have charged Homer Wright with one felony count of unlawful gun use. They charged the man who broke into Wright’s home, 19-year-old Anthony Robinson with felony burglary.

Wright, who owns a pub in Englewood, called his arrest “unjust.”

“I think it’s wrong and it’s unjust that I can’t protect me and my whatever, and that’s wrong,” Wright told The Chicago Sun-Times.

Police said Wright was arrested because he had two previous weapons convictions – in 1968 and 1994.

Wright told the Chicago Tribune that he was awakened. by his wife – who heard a noise. Wright found Robinson inside the house trying to steal liquor. So he grabbed a pistol and shot the burglar once in the leg.

Court records indicate the suspect had been arrested at least 13 times since 2009, the Sun-Times reported.

Wright’s arrest has infuriated his family and his neighborhood, many of whom called the elderly man a pillar in the community.

“If a man can’t defend himself from harm, what can he do,” Daryl Smith, a tow truck owner told the Chicago Tribune. “We’re outraged as a community and we’re calling for the state’s attorney’s office to drop the charges. This man has done nothing wrong.”

18th Ward Committeeman William Delay said Wright was just trying to protect his home – and besides – he didn’t kill the burglar.

“He only maimed this guy yet he has been arrested and is sitting in jail,” Delay told the Sun-Times. “Where is the justice in that?”

Wright was released on his own recognizance.

His grandson, Courtney Cook, had some advice for the burglar.

“If you want to rob somebody, you got to face the consequences,” he told the Sun-Times.

Massachusetts man facing charges after shooting bear in self-defense in his yard

Reason:

Richard Ahlstrand, of Auburn, Massachusetts, faces criminal charges after encountering a bear in his back yard and shooting the damned thing to avoid being mauled or eaten. Specifically, as noted at Reason 24/7, he’s charged with “illegally killing a bear, illegally baiting a bear, illegal possession of a firearm and failure to secure a firearm.” All of these charges, once translated from Massachusetts to American, seem to stack up to outrage that Ahlstrand didn’t make his yard completely inhospitable to animals that are rarely seen in the area, and then investigated a suspicious noise with a weapon in hand rather than cower under the bed. Worst of all, he actually defended himself when he encountered danger.

The baiting charge, as J.D. Tucille notes, comes from the fact that Ahlstrand had a large barrel of birdseed in his yard, even though it was not meant to bait a bear, and bears are rarely seen in the area.

The police account, with a hint of contempt for a 76-year-old having the temerity to defend himself:

Chief Sluckis said the bear is believed to have been attracted to a 50-gallon drum of birdseed Mr. Ahlstrand had in his backyard. He said Mr. Ahlstrand told police he heard a noise outside and felt in fear of his life.

“He went back inside, retrieved a shotgun and decided to shoot the bear,” Chief Sluckis said. “Obviously we believe if Mr. Ahlstrand was truly in fear for his life he would have stayed secured in his home and would have called the police.”

There’s that indomitable spirit of ’76 embodied. Hide in your house at all costs, people, “dial 911 and then curl into a fetal position whenever they hear a curious noise.”

Via CBS Boston, a 300-400-lb bear began chasing him before he went inside to get his gun.

The feds dropped charges filed against an Idaho man in 2011 for a similar “crime,” amidst public protest and urging by the governor of Idaho. Jeremy Hill’s children were playing in his yard when a grizzly bear showed up. Yelling to warn his children, but unable to confirm they were all out of the bear’s range, Hill grabbed his daughter’s shotgun to protect the family. He then immediately reported his “crime” to the state wildlife authorities. This is the government’s take on that:

Although hunting of grizzlies is generally prohibited under the Endangered Species Act, the law allows the animals to be killed if they are a threat to human life.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement that wildlife investigators were unable to pinpoint where the Hill children were when three grizzlies appeared about 40 yards from the family home. When the bears neared a pig pen, Hill fired the first of three rounds at the closest of the bruins, according to statements by the government and by Hill.

“By the time Mr. Hill fired the final shot, he was aware that all of his children and his wife were inside of their house,” according to the prosecutors’ statement.

Hill said he fired the third and fatal shot because he thought “it would be very dangerous to leave the bear wounded, possibly posing a threat to others.”

Falsely-Named “Juvenile Justice” Department Terrorizes 7-Year-Old Gun “Felon”

For a wonderful moment in the lives of the Grant family, it looked like the local North Carolina sheriff’s department had not been quite federalized into the National Security state apparatus or socialized into the gun paranoia. But then the Orwellianly-named Department of Juvenile Justice stepped in and summoned a seven-year-old child for face two felony charges.

The trouble started because Sam Grant disobeyed his mother, ran off with his BB gun, and shot at an abandoned house. In the process, he accidentally hit car driving by. His parents reacted right away:

“Cherry immediately called the sheriff’s department and offered to pay for the damage to the car. The deputy sheriff took a report but said he wasn’t going to press charges and neither was the driver. Instead, Sam’s parents took responsibility, paid for the damages and administered parental justice. Sam got punished. They took away his BB gun and made him do community service at their local church. ‘We wanted to teach him responsibility so he’s been cleaning up around the church and polishing pews to repay the $350 it cost to repair the car,’ Robbins told Fox News.”

Not good enough. Thanks to the legacy of progressivism, we now have multiple layers of tax-feeding organizations who justify their existence by making it their business to fix families like the Grants. They were summoned to “Juvenile Justice” court to face two felony charges—claiming Sam was guilty of a “violent crime.” The day before their court date, Sam turned eight years old. His father told Fox News that, he was shaking with fear that night.

The happy ending to this story is that someone within the bureaucracy figured out how stupid and evil all this was. When they arrived, their court-appointed attorney informed them that the charges had been dropped.

This is not good enough. Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of running into the “juvenile justice” system or “child protective services” or whatever other self-serving names these agencies give to themselves, knows that the overwhelming experience is deep, dark fear. You have no idea who these people are or what motivates them. You simply get a notice from a faceless bureaucracy that claims to own you and your kids.

I can only hope and pray that fear will be a profitable experience for Sam as he grows up—despite the injustice of it. While he’s learned a lesson about the responsibility of owning a gun, he also knows the powerlessness that comes from government bureaucrats. While he will remember that he was let go, he will make a point of never allowing himself to be under the power of such bureaucrats again. He will know never to trust them for protection and to allow them to disarm him on the promise they will make him “safe.”

Safety is not to be found in autocratic dictatorial bodies who believe that children don’t belong to their parents—just as safety from guns is not be found in agencies that want to take yours.

So, he had two weapons convictions and wasn't allowed to own a gun.

According to the article at http://www.suntimes.com/news/crime/11670014-418/charges-dropped-against-81-year-old-man-who-shot-intruder.html

He had been charged with unlawful use of a weapon because, as a felon, he is not allowed to have a gun.

Oh and would you look at that, they dropped the gun charges on May 4th, yet you left that tidbit out for your own agenda.

So now tell me, you're OK with this man owning a gun when he's a twice convicted felon?

I'm especially shocked that since he's African American that you would a: give a shit that he faced charges at one point and b: have the right to own a gun to protect himself, even though he's a twice convicted felon.

But hey, it's OK to like "one of them" when it works for your political views.

OK, now throw me something stupid back like MOOSELIMBs should rape me or some such.

It is nice to see Chicago, with the tightest gun laws in the nation coupled with the lowest compliance rate with Federal gun law in the nation finally cracking down and enforcing the law against a felon who has turned his life around and runs a business...

... while they look the other way as the black youth does its best to cull its numbers.

There should have been even MORE abortion in the ranks of the ethnic community most likely to abort its unborn.

The unqualified disaster of the Great Society in ameliorating poverty is by now a tonic wisdom to be wielded in narratives reserved for those who will in the future study our decline and click their tongues. The lessons they will uncover will be how a society, steeped in unreflective compassion, believed that by shoveling money at what are largely moral problems, they could constrain the source of poverty. Instead, the foolish assumptions of academic altruism served only to institutionalize poverty generationally and to destroy the primary human institution for the rearing of children; and in the bargain, corrupt and taint the moral psychology of its hapless recipients. Having denied the reality of a fixed human nature, Social Science and its skewed understanding of psychology and economics failed to consider one of the most persistent iron laws of economics: what you subsidize you will get more of and what you penalize you will inhibit. Having provided the perverse incentives for economic failure by throwing redistributed cash at the young and foolish, the liberal monstrosity effectively turned nature on its head.
In the dynamics of such a convoluted system, men were reduced to economic fifth wheels: useful only in their capacity as cultural roosters and diminished in their contingent status within female dominated households. The entire unsavory enterprise can be laid at the doorstep of Uncle Sam, who bankrolls this subsidization of upturned nature wherein children became the de facto economic fulcrum by which money comes to the savvy mother. That the explosion of African American illegitimacy in a span of fifty years* surged*from the high teens to nearly 75% nationwide and over 90% in urban housing projects is unquestionably a consequence of the crooked incentives of misbegotten compassion. Moreover, the lack of structure and commitment that flows like a draining boil from these broken families has led to the moral indolence and the learned helplessness of men and women who have bought into the wretchedness of psychological servility fostered by a crooked view of existence near the bottom rung. Boys have learned that they are more accoutrements than men: lashing out at their environment's masqueraded hopelessness in a structure designed to perpetuate need -- effectively feeding into a loop where the stunted human horizon yields a self-fulfilling prophecy of quashed potential and dismal outcomes.

So now we can say Oh hey, you changed your life around, so you know what, have a gun.

I also love your racist comments r.e. the abortions.

Again though, if he fits in with your narrative, he's one of the "good ones".

Fucking hypocrites.

No, he changed his life around only to be told that he cannot protect himself from his former peer group, which is fair, as long as his former peer group's antics are not being ignored because of the drive to affirmative action racism which you display by going on to label anyone with an inconvenient truth about the destruction of the black community since the 50s as racist.

Liberals seem to like having their minorities in dire straights so that they have an unassailable victim to use in the desire to impose a perfect Utopia on us.

I never said he was a "good one." He broke the law. The problem is, the state of the city that pretty much compelled him to feel that he had to break the law because the law is not being enforced to prevent the perception that Chicago is a racist place.

That is probably why the incidents of flash mobs are being kept on the down-low by the national media; we cannot bring ourselves to say anything bad about the alternative culture that we have fostered in the name of tolerance, diversity and understanding while we marvel as they call each other nigger and declare out loud their misogynist fantasies about how they would treat their future hos...

You are the racist, not me. You're white, I'm not.

I do not have the power.
