7th Annual Year End Nominations

Shit.

Here we go again.

Don't be so enthusiastic. I'm pissy because I wanted to nominate DrM's Tsunami and it's not on lit anymore. Unless I'm blind and missed it.

I nominated Shang's Alexander Pope piece last year -- and it was a January post. BUT, I can remedy that now.

Since this is my first year to participate, I have to ask: is it normal for so many nominations to come from people with no posts?

LOL - yes. That was the subject of much consternation last year.

We lost a few categories this year, I think ... but I can't be arsed to figure out which ones.

Glad I'm not the only who thinks it's...odd. I mean, how is one to know that it's not someone using an alt to nominate themselves? But I suppose it doesn't matter much if that happens, since there has to be more than one nomination in the end.

AFAIK, there doesn't HAVE to be more than one nomination -- but those seconded, thirded, etc. will take precedence if there are more than x# nominated.

And, it's the monthly category nominations which are missing (Duh!). December has to be posted first, I guess, before those will be announced. They'll just go in the polls.

November hasn't been announced yet either.

I am not sure who to nominate this year...and there are more categories then that missing.... will edit when I figure out what is missing

I'm conflicted on most influential writer. It's a hard choice between Zoot and Shang and probably I'm forgetting some other choice.

And "influential" doesn't necessarily equate with "best," either. ;)

Not that "odd" when you think about it carefully. Plenty of writers AND readers don't post on the boards but that doesn't mean the person they nominate and/or vote for shouldn't be considered OR that THEY should be thought of as ALTS.

What bothers me more than this is last minute nomination and votes like what happened last year. In pretty much every category last year it happened that someone who didn't EVEN look to be a contender to receive the award "miraculously" got it with a blizzard of last minutes vote for them. THIS I think is even more odd than nomination made by someone who doesn't have any post or close to none.

impressive said:

True. Very true. I'm not sure who's most influenced me honestly, besides my editor.

Well, at least I'm not getting any Most Original Sex Scene nominations this year either.

Lizzy,

You have WAY too much time on your hands. Go watch a bowl game. :)

Every year I nominate Zoot for most influential based on his skill as a writer and the help he gives other writers on the Story Discussion Circle, Story Feedback forum, and here at the AH.

I garnered a lot of late votes last year. Even though I personally voted for the winner. I did not go out begging votes nor did I make a bunch of acounts or anything underhanded. Honestly, I was relieved the late "surge" didn't carry me past the eventual winner. But that late surege in voting came none the less.

I personally wish the voting was kept secret rather than displayed. I think there are authors here, with fanbases, who benefit enormously from their fans being able to see they are running a close (or in my case not so close) second. I know there are irregularities and I accept the plausibility of an author working to win by any means, up to and including dishonest means. I also know you can garner late votes or dubious nominations when you have absolutely nothing to do with it.

It only takes one fan, among an authors readership to engineer dubious votes/nominations. The author can be completely innocent of wrong doing and oblivious to the actions being taken in his/her behalf.

I am not saying it dosen't happen, merely pointing out we, as authors, should be very circumspect in voicing suspicions a particular author is stuffing the ballot box. Those accusations hurt and they hurt even more when they are untrue, because there is just no way you can deny them successfully. You can't prove you aren't and people will convict you on circumstantial evidence.

I'm not trying to discourage debate or investigation, just saying from my personal experience, the potential for a tarring and feathering of someone who is blameless is very possible.

Ooooh don't read me wrong Colly...I completely agree with you and didn't mean to imply it was the writer's fault if he/she got a surge of last minute votes.

The point I was trying to make, probably did a bad job if I got misunderstood, is that just as you pointed out that last minute votes are as valid as early ones, well nomination made by someone who doesn't have any posts on the board or close to none is as valid also.

Well, you can know without a doubt that the ones who nominated me are not alts. Everyone should know me (or the ones that know I'm Crim anyway) well enough to know I'd never do something like that. I about fell out of my chair when I saw them. I don't belong in a list with writers the caliber of Colly and Dr. M.

I was one of the ones last year who thought some of the nominations were a bit hinky, but being on the other side of things, I can see that maybe they weren't so much after all.

These tend to pass me by every single year. The sheer weight of stories and readers on Lit seem to make nominations into a bit of a farce, especially as there's no criteria for whom can nominate. Plus, my lack of Lit reading tends to leave me a bit ignorant on some of the nominees!

I wasn't referring to you at all. It's just the people I've never heard of getting several nods on the first day that surprised me. But then, I'm somewhat new around here, so there are lots of people I don't know.
