A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook central Oklahoma at 9:06 a.m. today.

Apparently it was felt all the way to North Texas. More here.

Any OK folk here? How ya doin'?

I'm in north Texas at the moment and nothing felt here. Of course, 4.5 would take a back seat to the afternoon traffic in DFW. and the traffic on I 20.

I talked to a friend in Norman, OK an hour ago. She described it like hearing a large mud ball thrown against the side of her house. Lots of car alarms then went off.

Aproximate 7

In 1812 an approximate 7 on the Richter scale occurred on the New Madrid Fault. This fault branches into Oklahoma but the 1812 quake was in the St. Louis to Memphis area.

The quake was intense enough to cause soil liquefaction in the West Tennessee area. Lower than a 7.5 probably 7.0

According to the USGS, the strongest of the four New Madrid quakes measured 7.7. That's one bad quake and the damage took place over a huge area because of the soft soil of the Mississippi drainage. Liquefaction was so intense that fountains of dirt and water shot 10 feet in the air. Phew! Fortunately, the area was very sparsely populated--then! Now, it would be catastrophic.
