2003 Survivor Discussion Thread

Hi all, I need to know if anyone would be interested in a collaboration, and Chicklet, if you're out there, how would the scoring work?

I'd be willing to work on a collaboration with anyone if an idea strikes me or you = ) Also if you go to the Author's Hangout or Story Ideas, people might want to join in there, too.

Our chain story didn't work out, but there will be more ideas this year - maybe you have one?

Since you're still pretty new around here I'm sure Chicklet will go easy on you, but I thought I'd remind you that this thread was meant only for people's scoring sheets and not for other discussion. (She has a 2003 Survivor Contest discussion thread.)

I'm sure Chicklet will remove your two posts and this one of mine once she sees them, but hopefully your questions will be answered.

Do you remember if you filled out a scoring sheet yet? Also, have you submitted any stories/poetry for 2003 yet?

Apologies

okay, I'm really tired and I'm really sore (I think my toe is broken - updates after my dr appointment thursday) so I'm not able to really think right now. Therefore, I didn't copy the posts directly from the other thread because I just can't for the life of me think straight. arggh.

The next person to post a discussion post in my score thread will be strapped to a bench and beaten with a cane until they are beet red. unless they like that sort of thing, in which case I'll make them watch every single episode of the Teletubbies.

Okay, PenanceS' question about Chain stories had me thinking... Does each author in it get 3 points for their first chapter?

IE:
Let's say three authors write a 6 chapter story. (Each author writes two chapters.) Would each author get 3 points for their first submission in the story (and then 1 point for their second submission)?

yeah, for Survivor purposes it would count exactly as any other category. If I wrote Chapter 1, I'd get 3 points for it since it was the first I submitted for that category. When you wrote Chapter 2, you'd get three points. If I wrote Chapter 3, it'd only count as one point for me.

I have a couple of questions, even though I am nowhere near the point when I really need to know the answer...

If I get an immunity (and when the hell am I going to get one??!!) and I have nine categories filled with stories (looking even less likely than the immunity at this point) does that get me a 5 point bonus?

And, suppose I fill twenty categories (ha) will I get 10 points in addition to the 5 I got for my first 10 categories, or will I just have 10 points altogether?

I think it's been stated that the immunities do not count towards the bonus points. So, if you claim three immunities within the year, those three cannot go towards "5 completed categories", etc.

Immunities *do* count towards bonuses. The bonuses get added up, as well, so if you fill in all the categories (including immunities) by the end of the year, you'll have a total of 35 bonus points.

I'm with SexyChele on this one. I'm not sure where all this "should" get to do this and "should" get to do that is coming from. I really don't see how we're being "punished" when this contest is purely optional. We all have categories that we can't or won't contribute to for one reason or another - that's what immunities are for.

Translating software makes lousy translations. Now I'm not the best author out there and not all my stories are going to be good, but not for lack of trying on my part. Everything I submit will represent effort. It makes me feel good to imagine that I have or will eventually have an audience and I would not subject them to anything less than my best effort just for the sake of 3 points. I would no more want to disappoint some French/Spanish/German etc. speaker by posting an unreadable story than I would want to disappoint an English speaker by posting a crappy story.

Bottom line is this is a WRITING contest and it's about what we can write, not what we can feed into the computer and have spewed out in different languages. Those who have the skill to write in more than one language have an advantage in this ONE category, and those who don't will have to find their advantage elsewhere, but no one's being punished.

I happen to be a freelancer and writing is how I make my living. I am trying to do the best I can, just like everyone else -- I just happen to have a little more time to devote to this.

I LOVE to write, and for me its all about being with a pen or a keyboard.

Then it sounds like you will have no problem coming up with additional stories to build up points with without having to translate them via software.

If people think that I am a jerk, then fine, but I am staying true to myself and my craft. If you are just out to bash me then fine...

Who are you talking to here? I don't think you're a jerk and I didn't see any bashing going on. But again, good to hear you're staying true to your craft and WRITING stories.

Most of all, lets see to it that our boys over on the front lines get home safely...

Just the boys? And any suggestions on how we might go about doing this?
