🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

Thanks for the update and laugh, @Lmizzler :) Do you think it hurts more on the actual leg day or 24 hrs after leg day? Either way.. ouch!

Sweaters-
When you’re sore after a workout, do you whine? Grin and bear it? Take Advil? Or grunt about how “Pain is just weakness leaving the body”? Something else entirely?
Mine hurt the most about 1 day to 2 after. And I’m totally a whiny baby about it. Seldom do medicine. Just whine about the soreness. 😂

Just get over soreness from most recent race ..... Time to get back to it though. I'm entered in "last annual heart of the South" ..... Very intense (you can look it up if you're curious if not I won't bore you with paragraphs explaining it).... And need to make some corrections after the minor debacle a week and a half ago.

Definitely time to sweat!!! And embrace sore legs

I don’t know how you do those super long runs!!!
You should definitely share info about this race

I’d like to hear about them too!

Lol 😂 you all are too kind to me to ask (mostly nobody cares what I'm doing 😂).... So last annual heart of the South (HOTS) is out on by Lazarus lake who is sort of a legend in the ultra running space ..... This one is a journey run: we have no support and just have to carry or acquire everything along the way ..... We arrive the day before at the finish line. We board busses and head out near the start (roughly we are told 350 miles away). At dinner that night we get sent the course and only have that night to do any planning etc.....next morning the bus takes us to the aguak start where we are sent on our way. Twice a day we have to check in with our location and occasionally we are asked to send selfies from certain points on course. Otherwise we are on our own unless we choose to drop out (and get picked up by the "meat wagon") .... We have I think it's ten days to finish. I'm trying for 7 but that's aggressive.

There's my essay 😂

That's craziness man!!! Best of luck. Sounds like quite an adventure for sure!

That means you are planning to cover 50 miles a day!

Yea that's the thought anyway....in 200s I generally shoot for 70-75 a day but this is in the summer in the South and a real possibility of mountain not just hills. So 50 seems "reasonable" for my level 😂....but none of this can really be described as reasonable

What is a better alternative to Running that doesn't involve running.

I hate running, sorry. Is walking enough.
I strained my Achilles badly a few months ago and haven’t been able to run since. I can now confirm, there is no better alternative to running.
I hit the ski erg, rower and assault bike in the gym now, as an alternative form of cardio, and I miss running so much.

In saying all that, walking is definitely enough mate. Movement is king, any kind of movement.
Speaking of movement, it’s just before 6am here, time to go crush the gym before work.
Have a great day all!

Depends on your goals.

Walking is actually superior to running for fat burning but not so great for cardio fitness (depending on where you’re starting)

OK. OK look. I'm back AGAIN on the track to 10 pullups. Work nearly broke me at the end of 2024 and again at the start of 2025, so lack of sleep/time was a big problem. I'm also heavier than I've ever been, and my pullups dropped from my max of 7 all the way down to 2.
But, I'm back to 5, 6 if you count a very gnarly last one (which... I can't, really).
Going to get that 10 this year!

Ok, so the first part. Exercise that is less vigorous (say, not more than 60%max HR) burns fat. When you get more intense the body releases cortisol and signals for you to burn glycogen instead (figures you’re in a fight, you need a faster source of energy) so after exercise your body restores its glycogen stores and you haven’t lost any fat. At lower intensity, your body can comfortably burn fat instead (of course you’re not burning them super rapidly, at maybe 300 kcal an hour it’s going to take nearly 12 hours to burn a pound of fat if you don’t congratulate yourself for exercising with a six pack of donuts, KWIM?)

So, to build cardio fitness, you have to put your heart and lungs under a certain degree of stress. If you’re overweight and sedentary, walking is probably all you should try, but as you lose weight and your heart and lungs get stronger from walking, they will continue to be under less and less stress (that walk that used to boost your HR to 120, now maxes out at 90) so you need to increase intensity somehow to continue building. Some people run or bike or skip rope, if you like walking you can walk steeper hills, carry a weighted backpack etc. to create that load.

In the last 18mo I’ve lost about 70 pounds, almost 50 of it was fat. I pick up 70 pounds now and am amazed I was carrying all that each day. Still have 20-30 (haven’t locked in super fine on that end goal) to go.

I really need to do some strength training now that I’ve lost significant weight. I need to have someone tell me do A,B,C on Mon Wed Friday and X,Y,Z on Tuesday Thursday Saturday.

Trying to plan it out myself isn’t getting me started. I keep grasping at shiny objects and not doing any of them.

This has probably been discussed before..but here we go..

Anyone have any running shoes that they swear by? Only kicker..I have high arches so arch support needs to be superior.

Right now I have Brooks Glycerin StealthFit 21's and I love them, but I need a new pair and want to try something different.

I was going to say Brooks.

I also like Asics. They have a few models that have high arch support and come in medium and wide widths.

I can only tell you what has worked for me. I don’t want to steer you wrong so it would be a good idea to get advice from a professional, but this thread is a nice place to crowd source.

My body responds to running. I lose weight quickly from running. I’ve never been the best runner. I run for a bit and then walk, then sprint, then jog, etc. Intervals are really effective for me. So, walking could really work well for you, especially if you speed walk some, or walk hilly routes.. just a thought. That might be a way to mix it up a bit.

Hurrah you’re back at it! I enjoyed following along with you before and I look forward to doing so again :)

Nice to see you back here.

Interesting. I did the couch25k program, and intervals are a part of that. But you moved to a point where you ran continuously. So I have always been under the impression that to benefit from a run one should not stop to walk, ie one shoudl maintain the running pace continuously.

I don't deny it's benefits, but just don't connect with it

Hi..... So I feel like I went through a period where I tried different shoes etc like crazy. And I think if you talk to fifty runners you'd get fifty shoe recs. My humble amature advice is find something that works and stay close to that for YOU. I wear Saucony almost exclusively now .... I even have the two models I wear bookmarked on Amazon and if they go on sale or whatever I buy a pair to be ready .... I feel good in them but that's what works for me

How's that for a no answer answer from a non expert 😂

That nothing but the best advise I have heard in a long time!

- I have tried several running shoes as well, and always, always I end up with the same brand in the end (Kayano from ASICS). So now I just buy 2-3 news pairs every year.. as soon as they get on sale! 😆

Finding a shoe that fits, that is almost half of the victory (then comes the socks.. do not get me started! 🙈).
