A lot of songs come to mind while I was deployed. We used to listen to stuff to pump us up before operations, listen to other stuff to mellow us out after operations.

Never got a chance to see them live.

I was talking the other day about "Clap/Stomp/Hey!" alt folk. "Ho Hey," is as "Clap/Stomp/Hey!" as you get, even having "hey" in the title. It was written to get under the skins of aloof New Yorkers when the band was first starting out in Brooklyn. They figured yelling a lot would get indifferent concertgoers' attention. And it worked, as it got everyone's attention.

I like this song because it lacks any pretense or illusions. It is as straightforward and sincere a song you will hear produced in these cynical years. I also love it because when I lived in New York, I lived in SoHo, so I know exactly what it feels like standing on Canal and Bowery streets in Chinatown. It is a big intersection, and there is a small concrete island between the roads, complete with trees and dying grass on it. There is a park bench there, or there was one 30 years ago. It is a nice place to wait for something that may or may not work out.

Oh Muse. So big. And so forgettable. But I have such a soft spot in my heart for you. This particular song was the one where my daughter and I started to bond over music. Our tastes (hers more than mine naturally) have grown and changed considerably since, we still love this song.
