This was dangerous music when it came out. There was little that was like it. I saw them way before their peak (and forgot completely about them until finding a copy of one of their early cassettes I picked up in the bar) and again when they were on the Use Your Illusion tour in '91.

Day 24: A song with lyrics you love
I've used this song before, when I first started doing The Challenge. I have made an effort never to repeat, but I really love the lyrics of this song. Mikel Jollett writes in a lovely, dense, and sardonic poetic style, and sometimes I identify so strongly with his songs that I wonder if they were written for me. This song so much so that I have more than half decided to tattoo some of the lyrics on my skin.
"Why Why Why" is a breakup song, where the singer watches his girlfriend walk away from him, and he blames her. By the end of the song, half a year has passed, and he realized that he had ignored everything she did to try to fix the relationship. The heart of the song is him trying to work it all out, each starting with the phrase "it's foolish to think," where he talks himself out of attempting to fix things. I love all of it, but I will highlight two sections. The first, I understand all to well, and love the metaphor:
"And it's foolish to think
You can bury it all in some endless drive to drink
Every person you meet can tell you're a ship
Taking water in a storm and you're starting to sink"
The most cutting lyric for me, the one that may be my next tattoo:
"They say follow your heart
What if your heart never knew where to go? Or why?"
And that is the question.

"And I’ll write your name in stars across the sky..."

Joe Henry - Lighthouse
It could be any of Joe's songs, but this one always hits.. he has a way with a phrase, it gets me every time. Also, i Love this whole album and this song fads in from the previous one, as if sneaking up to put its hands (paws) over your eyes to say "guess who?". I really appreciate today's prompt. This is my favourite part of listening to music!
Naturally, I could go with any endless number of brilliant choices from my songwriting gods (Cohen, Dylan), since today's prompt represents the initial reason that they achieved deity status in my young eyes. However, I truly enjoy it when innovative and unique lyricism is hidden in plain sight... right there in the middle of mainstream rock radio. I always found this Hip song to be particularly fascinating, since there's not a typical "catchy" structure... no choruses, no easy lyrical hooks, just pure stream-of-consciousness storytelling... and yet countless times I've heard huge crowds (or stadiums) of Canadians belting this out word for word. I'm not always partial to the populist singalong, myself... but it's so much cooler when they're actually required to know quite intricate lyrics, rather than lazily pouncing on the low-hanging fruit of a somewhat predictable chorus. Oh, and perhaps it shouldn't go without saying that I luv the actual words to this song! Brilliant storytelling. Wonderful lyrics...

I love this song because so often following the "common sense" that people give me is really not right for me. I've found in my life the times I did what society said was the normal, proper thing to do - including all my friends - ended in disaster for me. This song celebrates doing what your intuition says instead of others.
And also it is a celebration of just feeling good and being happy.
Mary Chapin Carpenter - I Feel Lucky
I love this song because so often following the "common sense" that people give me is really not right for me. Bob Dylan, excellent song writer, I love most of the covers of his music. However, I just don't like his voice. It's shaped weird, has strange dips & flares. Voices should flow, but his creates an anxiety, a weird uncomfortable anxiety, in my field of vision. It's as though he's a bunch of cylinders, meant to be bound by gravity, but instead are floating in an unpredictable way, at once crashing into each there and yet floating too far apart. I know this makes no sense to people without chromesthesia, but Dylan fans are just sure I haven't heard the right song, that I'll love him eventually, when the truth is that I need a Xanax if forced to listen to him for any extended amount of time.
